A DWI checkpoint, also known as a sobriety checkpoint or roadblock, is a temporary road stop where law enforcement officers check drivers for signs of intoxication or impairment:

The purpose of a DWI checkpoint is to deter drunk driving by increasing the risk of being caught and arrested. Officers at a checkpoint are looking for drivers who are drunk, drugged, drowsy, or distracted. They may ask to see a driver's license and registration, and may also perform tests such as a breathalyzer, one-leg-stand, or walk-and-turn. If a driver is found to be impaired, they can be arrested and charged with a DUI.
DWI checkpoints are typically highly visible and publicized in advance. They are often set up on weekends and holidays.

We're her if you need us.

Why is group therapy beneficial?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy that can be important for a number of reasons, including:

Sense of community
Group therapy can help people feel less alone and more accepted by others who share similar experiences.

Learning
Group members can learn from each other, gaining new perspectives and coping strategies.

Social skills
Group therapy can help people become more comfortable in social situations.

Accountability
Group members can provide positive feedback and hold each other accountable, which can help people achieve their goals.

Self-discovery
Group members can see themselves through the eyes of others, which can help them identify blind spots and improve their coping skills.

Fresh perspectives
Group members can share their experiences and how they managed them, which can be eye-opening.

Cost
Group therapy is usually more affordable than individual therapy.

Efficiency
A single therapist can reach many people at once.

Eugene E. Kaplan is a North Carolina Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor who has been providing services for people suffering from substance use disorders for 16 years, beginning in Mecklenburg County and presently in New Hanover and Brunswick Counties.

Born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio area, Kaplan and his family moved to North Carolina in 1995. In 2004, he realized that the way he was living was not healthy and made the decision to get clean and sober; suggestions from mentors led Kaplan to return to school at 50 years old to become a counselor. He received an associate degree in human services technology with a concentration in substance abuse in 2008. Kaplan has been working as a substance abuse counselor since graduating and received a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in substance abuse from UNC Pembroke in 2020.

With experience in the counseling field and almost 20 years of living a recovery-based lifestyle, Kaplan is fully qualified and prepared to provide the services necessary to help lead the population that live in and around Brunswick County to the next phase in their recovery process.

Kaplan lives on Oak Island with his wife, Glenna, and their dog, Buddy.
