A DWI checkpoint, also known as a sobriety checkpoint or roadblock, is a temporary road stop where law enforcement officers check drivers for signs of intoxication or impairment:
The purpose of a DWI checkpoint is to deter drunk driving by increasing the risk of being caught and arrested. Officers at a checkpoint are looking for drivers who are drunk, drugged, drowsy, or distracted. They may ask to see a driver's license and registration, and may also perform tests such as a breathalyzer, one-leg-stand, or walk-and-turn. If a driver is found to be impaired, they can be arrested and charged with a DUI.
DWI checkpoints are typically highly visible and publicized in advance. They are often set up on weekends and holidays.
