Friday, I was contacted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to offer commentary on the heartbreaking school shooting in British Columbia. I agreed because every time a community experiences senseless violence, we all feel it — families, educators, children, first responders, and those of us who have walked alongside survivors of trauma and loss.
There are no perfect words for moments like these. No explanation that makes the unbearable feel bearable. What I try to offer — whether in person with a family, in a counseling session, or in a media conversation like this — is honesty, compassion, and a reminder that grief is real, pain is real, and connection matters now more than ever.
To the families who lost loved ones, to the students and staff who lived through this nightmare, and to the entire community of British Columbia: my heart breaks with you. There is no timeline for this kind of healing, and there is no “getting over it.” There is only walking through it — together, with support, with care, with presence.
Thank you to the CBC for the opportunity to speak about what matters most in moments like this — humanity, dignity, and the shared work of caring for one another.
If you watched the segment and have thoughts, reflections, or experiences you want to share, I’d be grateful to hear them. Let’s hold space for one another with empathy and respect.
💛
