BREAKING NEWS: Smyrna teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians and administrative assistants have reached an agreement with the Smyrna School District!!!

After months of negotiations and protests, Smyrna Educators Association members have ratified a deal with the Smyrna School Board that will convert planned โ€œlongevity bonusesโ€ into small pay raises and pave the way for a collaborative partnership heading into a future referendum.

Both sides released a joint statement today soon after SEA President Charles Welsh and Smyrna School Board President Jonathan Snow signed a Memorandum of Agreement:

โ€œThe Board of Education of the Smyrna School District and Smyrna Educators Association, Inc. are pleased to announce that they have agreed upon and ratified a Memorandum of Agreement to resolve the financial impasse that led the parties to request binding interest arbitration before the Public Employment Relations Board.

They both thank the PERB for its hard work in helping the parties reach an agreement that serves both parties fairly.

The parties agreed to allocate local funds onto the salary scales, instead of every five years as a service award. The parties look forward to a successful operating revenue referendum in the near future and will work collaboratively towards this goal.

The passage of an operating referendum will aid greatly in staff retention and recruitment, as well as educational programming and opportunities, benefitting our students for countless years to come.โ€

Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard over the last 8 months to get this deal done! And thank you to all of the union educators from across Delaware who stood in solidarity with SEA!
