Better Late than Never – Another Gem from ISES 2025 in Fort Collins 🌟🐴

I’m still catching up on some of the fascinating posters from the conference, and I didn’t want to miss sharing this one!

“AHA Hippotherapy Conceptual Framework 2024” – presented by Joann Benjamin ( fei / usef classifier AHA Faculty )

👉 In the United States, hippotherapy (the clinical use of equine movement) is recognized as a standard therapy tool in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology.

The American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) first developed their conceptual framework back in 1992 and updated it in 2024. It outlines nine theoretical tenets that support the clinical use of medical quality equine movement at its center and its impact on patients.

Highlights include:
🔹 Medical quality equine movement can facilitate neuromotor systems that support functional skills in patients.
🔹 The complexity of impacting human sensorimotor function requires performance-based equine movement and handling.
🔹 Consistent with the 5 Domains Model, therapy horses must be neurologically sound, emotionally and physically healthy, and capable of producing nuanced performance – both for patient benefit and for the welfare of the horses themselves.
🔹 The 2024 update reflects a growing body of evidence supporting the validity of this work in therapy.

It was a fascinating reminder of how the horse’s movement isn’t just valuable in training or sport – it can literally be medicine in motion. 🐎💡
