Coastal Horizons Rape Crisis Center (RCC) has picked 12 individuals out of the local city of Wilmington, Brunswick and New Hanover counties to represent their campaign of “Heroes in Heels”. These heroes are being recognized for the impact and support that they have provided to victims of sexual assault as well as support of local communities and the RCC. I have been given the distinct honor of being selected as one of the 12 “Heroes in Heels” for my volunteer work within the community fighting against sexual assault and human trafficking as well as for my professional support of the Army’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Prevention (SHARP) program. I take this issue very seriously due in part for my failures that I can point to in my past, specifically in college, of not supporting victims as needed. Couple this with the first-hand experience, as a young Marine Corps Military Policeman in Iwakuni, Japan, of the tragedy that befalls victims of sexual assault and I have been impacted by this scourge. Most recently, the Army SHARP program has been something that I have truly embraced for the voice that the Army is giving victims and their families. I know we all can point to a time when we could have done more; I am resolute to my commitment that should anyone need my help, whether professionally or personally, they will never be left wanting. The Sergeant Major of the Army strives for a “Not in my squad” mentality; I am going further with that and saying not in my house. I have three sons that I am raising to respect themselves, others, and especially to know where the line is at all times and to never cross it. As young men they will be empowered as leaders in athletics and school, to help those in need and not approach the topic of sexual harassment and assault dismissively. It all starts with me, their amazing mother, and how we set the tone within our own home. There is something we all can do to support the fight against sexual assault. As a Hero in Heels, I am working to not just spread the word about supporting the local RCC but am striving towards the greater good of supporting the fight against sexual assault.
