It is with a heavy heart we announce that on Sunday evening, February 21st 2021, Retired K9 Ross passed away. K9 Ross was 12 years old and began serving New Hanover County, with his handler Lt. Croom, in 2010. After working patrol for 7 years, K9 Ross retired in 2017. K9 Ross is credited with tracking and locating numerous suspects involved in criminal activity and sniffing out many narcotics finds that resulted in taking illegal drugs off the street. K9 Ross will be missed by his family. Rest easy Good Boy!

The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China. Their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell.
Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes. This is all very toxic to your dogs!! They regularly cause intestinal blockages and choking. The chews get slippery when they get wet and are near impossible to grab hold of to save a choking dog. Please be safe with your dogs and avoid these types of treats!

Please don't be tempted to buy these treats for Christmas. Contact us and we can discuss safer/ better alternative options.

💙🐾 We are honored to have been trusted with helping Artie cross the rainbow bridge to forever guard the pearly gates of Heaven. Rest easy buddy!

New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of Retired K9 Artie. Sgt. Baxley and K9 Artie were partners and patrolled the streets of New Hanover County from 2012-2017. Since 2017, K9 Artie has lived at home with Sgt. Baxley and enjoyed the retirement life. K9 Artie will always be remembered for his goofy personality. He had a great career as a working canine and was a tremendous asset to the Sheriff’s Office.

🚨 RECALL ALERT 🚨

Sunshine Mills, Inc. is issuing a voluntary recall of multiple dog food products due to elevated levels of aflatoxin that are potentially above the acceptable limit. The affected products were distributed in retail stores nationally.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mold by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities.

Here are the lot codes and dates of the products affected by this news:

What Caused the Recall?

The potential for aflatoxin levels above the acceptable limit in these products was discovered by routine sampling performed by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry showing that a sample of a single 4-pound bag of one lot of the product contained elevated levels of aflatoxin.

No illnesses have been reported in association with these products to date, and no other Sunshine Mills, Inc. pet food products are affected by this announcement.

While no adverse health effects related to these products have been reported, Sunshine Mills, Inc. has chosen to issue a voluntary recall of these products as a precautionary measure in furtherance of its commitment to the safety and quality of its products.

About Aflatoxin

Pets that have consumed any of the recalled products and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian.

Retailers who received the recalled lots have been contacted and asked to pull these lots from their inventory and shelves.

There are no other Family Pet, Heartland Farms, or Paws Happy Life products or other lot codes of these products affected by this precautionary recall.

This is a voluntary recall being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

What to Do?

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should discontinue use of the product and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.

RAFFLE!!

On May 26, 8 year old Meadow and her father, Aaron, lost everything they had in their home due to a house fire. This included their beloved two boxers, “Bella” and “Tyson”, and two kittens, “Paws” and “Cuddles”. Long-time client of Capeside and owner of our local Leland P.T.’s Grille, Aaron has been a supportive member of our community and we would like to give back to his family in their time of need. Please consider donating to enter our raffle and help a young girl rebuild her childhood. All raffle money will help fund new clothes, toys and furniture for Meadow.

Raffle items will be displayed in the main lobby at Capeside Animal Hospital and the drawing will be held in the afternoon on Friday August 16th.
Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $25 (cash only).
