👉What I look for in kids skincare ingredients
As a Derm PA, I spend a LOT of time reading ingredient labels—both in clinic and in the skincare aisle. And I know how overwhelming it can feel when you’re just trying to find something safe and simple for your kid.
Here’s the truth: Not all “kids” skincare is actually formulated for kids.
Some products market to children but contain ingredients better suited for adult skin—or worse, ingredients that can irritate developing skin barriers. So let me break it down…
✅ WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
💚Gentle surfactants like coco-glucoside or decyl glucoside (effective cleansing without stripping)
💚Ceramides (support barrier development)
💚Glycerin (simple, effective humectant)
💚Dimethicone or petrolatum (safe occlusives that lock in moisture)
💚Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (mineral SPF that sits on skin, not absorbed)
❌ WHAT TO AVOID:
🙈Fragrance or parfum (common irritant, unnecessary)
🙉Essential oils (natural ≠ gentle; many are sensitizing)
🙊Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) (harsh surfactant that disrupts barrier)
🙈Active ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, vitamin C serums (not appropriate for developing skin)
🙊Dyes or artificial colors (serve no purpose, potential irritants)
🚩 RED FLAG CLAIMS: If the label says “anti-aging,” “brightening,” “glow-boosting,” or “wrinkle-preventing”—put it back. These are adult skincare claims marketing to kids who don’t need (and shouldn’t use) those ingredients.
🟢 GREEN FLAG CLAIMS: Look for “pediatric dermatologist-tested,” “hypoallergenic,” “fragrance-free,” “pH-balanced,” and “barrier support.” These signal the product was actually formulated with developing skin in mind.
The bottom line: Kid skin needs protection, not correction.
Their skin doesn’t need fixing, treating, or “improving.” It needs gentle cleansing, barrier support, and daily SPF. That’s it.
