In 1998, Rita Hester, a Black trans woman in Boston Massachusetts was stabbed in her apartment and then later misgendered by the press. Transgender women rallied together to march through Rita’s neighborhood, and this was the conception of Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on November 20th each year to honor trans homicide victims.

Rachel Crandall-Crocker, an American psychotherapist and transgender activist, would participate in honoring trans victims, but the events of TDOR left her feeling depressed and wishing that there was a holiday to honor and celebrate transness, to feel joy with others in the trans community. Rachel had thought of Trans Day of Visibility and decided it should be on March 31st, far enough away to be removed from Transgender Day of Remembrance and Pride Month in June.

What started as a Facebook post has become a real movement. March 31 is now recognized by millions of people as Trans Day of Visibility, celebrating transgender people worldwide. Every major LGBTQ+ rights organization recognizes Transgender Day of Visibility with community gatherings, panels and celebrations. Skyscrapers across the nation light up with light pink, blue and white — transgender pride colors — on the day.

Planned Parenthood of Delaware is proud to celebrate Trans Day of Visibility and works to honor and support the Trans community every day. Visit our website to learn more about our gender affirming care services, and how PPDE supports the trans community.

March is Women’s History Month.

At PPDE, we’re celebrating women by highlighting leaders, professionals and trailblazers who shaped healthcare and history.

We are wrapping up our Women's History Month series by recognizing our own President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Delaware, April Thomas-Jones.

April serves as the first person of color to lead the organization in the First State and brings her passion for access to quality healthcare as a human right to the role.

April has experience as both an educator and a nonprofit leader, previously as the Executive Director of the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia, where she demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. April Thomas-Jones is a leader whose dedication to disenfranchised communities and advocacy for social justice and equity have been evident throughout her career; her skills at partnership building, fiscal management, and program development will ensure that Planned Parenthood of Delaware will continue to grow its programs and expand access for all.

While we honor and recognize women everyday at Planned Parenthood, we wanted to use this Women's History Month as an opportunity to highlight advocates, leaders, and trailblazers who fight to make the world better for all of us. Happy Women's History Month!

At PPDE, we’re celebrating women by highlighting leaders, professionals and trailblazers who shaped healthcare and history.

Alexis McGill Johnson is the President and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, a leading advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights. She is also the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), a national nonprofit organization that is the country's most trusted name in sexual and reproductive health.

Alexis McGill Johnson is a renowned social justice leader, lifelong political organizer, and a tireless advocate for reproductive rights and access to quality, affordable health care. Alexis has served in both organizations’ leadership for more than 15 years: as a former PPFA board chair, former Planned Parenthood Action Fund board member, and former Planned Parenthood Federal PAC chair. In those roles Alexis helped expand Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s advocacy power, and since taking leadership has led the organization through challenges — from its exclusion from Title X to the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.
