In December, our Whirling Thunder Wellness Center's youth volleyball crew had a fantastic time at the NAIA Volleyball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa! The girls loved cheering for the college teams and soaking up all the excitement.

"It was so inspiring to see volleyball played at such a high level—and meeting our very own board member, Mr. W***y Bass, made the day even more special," says WCHS Sports Coordinator, Rose Springer.

We are proud to sponsor and coordinate several rec teams, encouraging activity at every age. Learn more: https://www.wchs.health/community/wellness-services

This photo is from a training workshop completed with consultants from Seven Directions Center for Indigenous Public Health at the University of Washington. Our Winnebago Public Health Department (WPHD) Quality Improvement (QI) team is creating an Indigenous framework to guide our work.

As part of this effort, we’re developing an assessment tool rooted in the Indigenous Social Determinants of Health (ISDOH) framework—honoring reawakening, kinship, connection, cultural grounding, acceptance, resilience, and ceremony. These principles help us better understand the social and cultural factors that influence health in our community and strengthen the way we support our relatives.

This approach will help us connect our relatives to the resources they need for health and wellness and directly supports our Tribal Community Health Improvement Plan (TCHIP) goal to improve access to care.

It's not just cold and flu - it is also RSV season! We are seeing an uptick in positive cases of RSV, a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms.

THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO:
1 Cover your mouth when you cough and wash your hands to limit the spread of germs.
2 Take steps for cleaner air, such as bringing in fresh outside air, purifying indoor air, or gathering outdoors.
3 When you are sick, stay home and away from others, especially infants, older adults, and adults with chronic medical conditions. Consider wearing a mask in public to limit the spread of infection.

If you or your family is experiencing symptoms, call 402-745-3950 or stop by the hospital so we can help provide testing, treatment, and recommendations.

More information about Measles!🦠Measles is an acute, highly contagious respiratory viral disease. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, and rash. Although measles is usually considered a childhood disease, it can be contracted at any age. There is no specific treatment for measles, so immunization is the best way to protect yourself and your family against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

1. NOT VACCINATED: Children should receive their first dose of measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age and another dose at four to six years of age. If you or your family have not had two doses of the MMR vaccine, talk to your health care provider at 402-745-3950 right away. Especially, if you plan to travel to or live in a measles-affected state (like Nebraska) or country.

2. WITH SYMPTOMS: You think that you are having symptoms of measles, isolate yourself from others and call your healthcare provider, & emergency room 402-745-3951 BEFORE arriving to be tested. Do not arrive at a healthcare facility without giving advance notice unless it is a medical emergency.

3. ARRIVING AT WCHS: For anyone coming to the Hospital to see a provider, present at the ER, or pick up a prescription, with the rising rates of influenza and the two confirmed cases of measles in Nebraska, wearing a mask in our waiting spaces and patient areas is a good idea.

Thank you for doing your part to keep yourself and our relatives safe this time of year!

As we head into 2026, we’re proud to look back on one of our biggest accomplishments of the year—the Winnebago Public Health Department earning National Public Health Accreditation through PHAB.

This achievement places WCHS among an elite group of just eight accredited tribal health departments nationwide and reflects the incredible dedication of our public health team to excellence, accountability, and community wellness. đź’™

Nebraska has reported two confirmed cases of measles. Measles is highly contagious, so staying informed and taking precautions is important. Remember the best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated with the highly effective Measles, Mumps, & Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Can't remember if you or your kids have this vaccine, and want to be sure before traveling? Contact us at 402-745-3950 to check on your status today!

The measles case involves an unvaccinated child with an out-of-state travel history in Arizona, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said.
