Are kettlebells really as versatile as dumbbells? Are they as effective? Yes, and yes! While some movements can only be accomplished with dumbbells, kettlebells will challenge your stability and balance throughout your workout like none other due to their unique shape. Core activation is constant throughout the entire workout as the kettlebell will shift you off your center of balance, forcing your obliques to pull you back into a neutral position. While you can certainly do traditional dumbbell exercises with kettlebells, here's a few KB specific exercises that will really challenge your next workout!
- KB Swings (Glutes + Power)
- KB Offset Step Up (Quad + Glute + Core)
- KB Suitcase Carry Split Squat (Glute + Core)
- KB Side Press (Core + Shoulder + Hip Mobility)
- 1/2 Kneeling Woodchop (Core Stability)
- KB Halo (Shoulder Mobility + Serratus + Core)

Why do ACL injuries occur? Are they fully preventable?
Outside of contact and collisions in sports, many ACL injuries are a result of muscle imbalances, instability within the knee joint, and immobility/limited range of motion in the hips, ankles, and knee capsules. Simply getting big and strong doesn't fully equip your body to handle the demands your sport or activity puts on your knees. Instead, make sure that you address any mobility issues before building strength, and then make sure to prep your body for lateral, cutting movements. Thus, the progression for ACL injury prevention follows this flow: mobility and strength to build joint stability. But this doesn't just apply to your knees, but your hips, ankles, and low back. If one of the pieces in the kinetic chain are out of balance, then the others will bear the weight and suffer for it. Don't just settle for a bandaid (a.k.a. knee braces), fix the issue!

Core exercises shouldn't aim to build a 6 pack, but rather provide stability to the foundation of your body. In fact, most people don't know that the core is composed of 4 layers of abdominal muscles, each oriented to stabilize in different directions. Working in unison they protect your low back, hold healthy posture, and give athletes the ability to transfer power. But, how do you strengthen all four muscles? The best core exercises will utilize isometric holds like planks or a leg lift hold rather than concentric movements like crunches or Russian twists. Here's a list of core exercises we love here at the Center for Movement and Wellbeing:
- Dead Bug with Sandbag
- Side Plank with Row
- Clock Plank with Feet Elevated
- Ball Roll Out on Knees
- Chop and Lift 1/2 Kneeling
- Pallof Press 1/2 Kneeling

Did you know physical inactivity and chronic disease are among the biggest health challenges facing Kosciusko County right now? 👀

In this episode of the "ALL IN Kosciusko" Podcast, host Matt Deuel sits down with Dr. Kevin Roberts & Christy Walters from Grace's Center for Health & Wellness, along with Rich Haddad from K21 Health Foundation, to talk about what the data is telling us AND what's being done right here in our community to make a difference.

From new programs launching at Grace to the power of movement, prevention, and community partnership — this is a conversation every Kosciusko County resident needs to hear.
