Dyscalculia is a common learning disability in math. Many people think it only affects your ability to solve math problems, but it’s much more than that.

Learning its lesser-known signs can help you or your child get a diagnosis and the right supports.

High school is a time of transition. Teenagers become more independent and turn towards their friends and peers for guidance and support. They also start to explore larger questions like what they want to do in the future. It’s an exciting time that also comes with complicated, wonderful, confusing, and big emotions. Sometimes these emotions may be uncomfortable but feeling them is healthy and important because emotions provide teens with information about themselves and their environment and help them to connect to other people. Learning how to notice, label, and express their feelings helps teens to feel more in control.

Encourage your high schooler to watch this video of kids talking about their emotions. Even better — watch it with your child and discuss these key findings together:

1️⃣ Label and name feelings to increase emotional vocabulary AND reinforce that you can feel more than one emotion at a time.
2️⃣ Notice body sensations that are attached to different emotions that provide clues for what we are feeling. Sometimes it's easier to notice physical symptoms first.
3️⃣ Rate the feeling of emotions on a scale of 1 to 10 to capture that we feel emotions in different amounts or intensities.

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in water can affect people, animals, and our environment.

You can get sick if you go into, breathe in, or swallow the water. Animals can get sick or die, and cyanobacteria can reduce oxygen and block sunlight that plants need.

In childhood, ADHD is more commonly diagnosed in males than in females, but this difference disappears in adulthood. Because girls with ADHD typically show less disruptive behavior and are not referred as often for evaluation by teachers and parents, ADHD is often identified later in girls than it is in boys.

If your daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD, consider using these tips to help provide her with the best support:

1️⃣ Be aware that when symptoms are present – particularly symptoms of inattention – they often continue over time.

2️⃣ Recognize that for some girls, adolescence may bring more ADHD symptoms, especially hyperactive/impulsive behaviors.

3️⃣ Consider tracking your daughter's symptoms at regular intervals, such as before medication-management visits or at the beginning of school terms.

4️⃣ Talk with adults who see your daughter regularly to help track ADHD symptoms over time and across settings.

Children are natural problem solvers. Children problem solve when learning to walk, when they learn to pick up a ball from the floor, and when they learn to put a spoon in their mouth. Mathematical play should be geared around the idea of problem solving. This does not mean finding the right answer to a problem like 2 + 2, it means designing scenarios where children have to apply the mathematical knowledge they already have to a new situation and be able to reflect on their own processes or strategies for solving or fixing these situations.

Here are some examples of problem solving in play and how you, as a caregiver, can support it.

Anorexia nervosa, the most common eating disorder, is self-imposed starvation, usually by a young woman who is otherwise high-functioning. Personality types more likely to develop the disorder include athletes, perfectionists, and over-achievers. They are driven to maintain a dangerously low body weight because of a distorted self-image. Detecting anorexia can be very difficult because it typically affects high-performing kids.

Review this quick guide about Anorexia Nervosa. If you think your child may be anorexic, contact your child’s pediatrician when you first start noticing signs.
