There’s a reason you feel calmer after hugging your dog and it’s not just in your head. 🐾
When you cuddle or gently hug a dog, your body releases oxytocin, often called the “bonding hormone.” This powerful chemical helps lower stress, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of safety and connection. At the same time, levels of cortisol (your primary stress hormone) decrease, helping your nervous system shift out of “fight or flight” mode.
Research also shows that interacting with dogs can:
• Slow your heart rate
• Lower blood pressure
• Increase feelings of emotional regulation
• Support a more balanced, resilient nervous system
For many people, this simple act creates a moment of grounding bringing you back into the present and signaling to your body that you are safe.
At Winter Garden Hypnosis, we often talk about how healing doesn’t always start with big changes. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as a quiet moment… and a dog by your side.
Take a breath. Give your dog a hug. Let your nervous system reset. 💛
