How to cultivate more self-compassion by checking off these three elements:
•••
••
•Common humanity is the knowledge that as humans, we are all flawed. This is one thing that can bind us together. Along with that, the knowledge that emotions are universal. So while someone may not be going through exactly what you are, someone has felt the same feelings as you before. You are not alone! You can check off this element by reminding yourself of this in times of struggle and telling yourself that you’re not going through this alone.
•••
••
•Self-kindness is being able to extend to ourselves the same kindness we extend to a friend when they need it. We often believe that in order to succeed we have to be hard on ourselves. Research tells us time and time again that being kind and compassionate to ourselves is significant more effective. You can check off this element by trying to speak to yourself as if you were speaking to a friend. Notice how that might differ from how you normally speak to yourself.
•••
••
•Mindfulness is the ability to be present here in this moment right now. To notice what you’re seeing, hearing, feeling, etc. To allow your thoughts and feelings to exist without judgment. The benefits of mindfulness are numerous and one is that it helps you be more compassionate towards yourself. To check off this element try looking up “compassionate body scan” and completing the guided meditation by Kristin Neff. The more you do this practice and others like it, the more versed you will become in mindfulness and self-compassion.

Many of us have been taught to view love and connection to others as just a fun little bonus that we don’t really need. Some even view the desire for love and connection as a weakness. However, research tells us that love and connection are necessary for our survival and that a stable loving connection can significantly benefit our overall wellbeing. Let’s move away from this idea that we must always be independent and lean into the idea that it’s okay, necessary, and healthy to rely on others.

Having a regular gratitude practice every day can help you grow (research says so!)
Start out with a simple gratitude journal that you can complete at the same time every day. Notice how you feel after and savor that feeling ☺️🙏🏻🌱

In a season of gratitude, let’s be mindful of toxic positivity. Gratitude practice does not replace hard feelings. It holds space for them and allows for multiple emotions to co-exist.

Toxic positivity shames or minimizes hard feelings. You don’t have to find the silver lining. It’s okay to express hard feelings without negating them with a “but” or “at least.” All feelings are welcome and valid.

When we acknowledge things we are grateful for each day, our brain starts to look for things we are grateful for and it can change the brain chemistry. It’s a beautiful practice to implement with kiddos.

Let’s play a game. Ask your kiddo one thing they are grateful for and drop it below. Sweet, funny, interesting... all are welcome.

Are you thriving or just surviving? The COVID pandemic has created a concurrent crisis around mental health. We all need to be taking care of each other, but that includes ourselves. This is especially true for healthcare workers. This site from the Colorado Healthcare Ethics Resource Group offers information and resources to help address the anxiety and stress that can, if left unaddressed, deteriorate into crisis. https://cohcwcovidsupport.org/

We’re growing to learn that grief doesn’t really happen in stages and it’s more cyclical than originally thought. There is no “correct” order to go in when grieving. You’re not backtracking if you repeat different aspects of grief. It’s okay if you never get angry or depressed, etc. But these are some common aspects of grief that we find occur in most people and they can help us through our own individual process by providing self-awareness.

The list goes on but here are just 4 of the benefits of taking up a mindfulness practice.
••
When we think of mindfulness we often first think of meditation. Which, yes, is a form of mindfulness. However, challenge yourself to look beyond that at other possible mindfulness exercises. This can include mindful eating, a mindful walk, a body scan, etc. Build a mindfulness practice for yourself to start seeing these benefits. 🌱🌻

What’s your attachment style? Our attachment style forms early in our childhood and impacts how we show up in our adult relationships. Oftentimes our attachment style shifts throughout our lives based on our experiences with others. We can become more secure by going to therapy and finding others who are secure and reliable in relationships. Self-awareness of your attachment is the first step towards growth. ☺️🌱🌻
