CHHHA Renewal in New Jersey: How Often Do You Need to Renew?

In New Jersey, your Certified Homemaker–Home Health Aide (CHHHA) certification must be renewed every two years.

Your certification expiration date follows the Board’s renewal cycle, for example:
-Current renewal date: 11/30/2025
-Next renewal: 11/30/2027
-After that: 11/30/2029

👉 Note: New Jersey does offer a 30-day grace period, but you will be charged a late fee. It’s always better to renew on time.

If you have ANY questions, feel free to leave them in the comment section — we’re here to help every CHHHA stay active and stress-free.

Most nurses say CNA work made them more confident and patient-focused.

You learn compassion, teamwork, patience, and hands-on skills that nurses use every day.

It also teaches you to appreciate CNAs because you’ve done the work yourself.

It doesn’t replace nursing school, but it strengthens the foundation you’ll build everything on.

Want ER or ICU someday? Choose CNA roles that expose you to fast cases.

Look for positions titled ER Tech, ICU Tech, Monitor Tech, or Patient Care Tech in critical units.

Even if the title isn’t “CNA,” the work gives you strong experience with emergencies, codes, equipment, and high-acuity patients.
It’s the best head start you can give yourself.

CHHHA Renewal in New Jersey: Part 1 — What You MUST Know Before You Renew

Renewing your CHHHA certification in New Jersey can feel confusing, and many aides only realize something is wrong when they’re already close to the deadline. So let’s make this simple, clear, and stress-free.

This guide covers the core basics you must know before starting the renewal process.

1. How Often Do You Need to Renew?
In New Jersey, your Certified Homemaker–Home Health Aide (CHHHA) certification must be renewed every two years.

Your certification expiration date follows the Board’s renewal cycle, for example:

-Current renewal date: 11/30/2025
-Next renewal: 11/30/2027
-After that: 11/30/2029

👉 Note: New Jersey does offer a 30-day grace period, but you will be charged a late fee. It’s always better to renew on time.

2. Who Handles CHHHA Renewal?
All CHHHA renewals in New Jersey are processed by:
New Jersey Board of Nursing (NJBON)

-They manage:
-The online renewal portal
-Renewal notices
-Fees
-Verification of employment from your agency

Everything is done through their system—there is no paper renewal.

3. What Are the Main Requirements for Renewal?
To renew your certification successfully, you must have:

✔ Active CHHHA Employment
You need to have worked under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) in a licensed home care agency.

If you have zero work for two full years, renewal becomes more complicated (covered in a later part).

✔ A Valid Email Address
The Board sends renewal notices only by email and to the home mailing address they have on file.

If your email is old, inactive, or full — you may miss your renewal notice.

✔ Your Agency Must Verify You
Your employer must electronically confirm:

-You worked for them
-You were supervised by an RN
-Your employment is active or recent

Without this verification, the Board cannot renew you.

✔ Payment
Renewal fees vary by cycle and appear on your portal when you begin renewal.
You must pay online for the renewal to be processed.

4. When Will You Receive Your Renewal Notice?
The NJ Board of Nursing sends a notice about 60 days before the renewal date.

But here is the common problem:

❗ Many CHHHAs never see the email because:

It lands in spam
Their email changed
Their inbox is full
They never updated their email in the system

Tip:
Add these domains to your safe list:njoag.govgov

And always update your email if you change it.

5. What If You Don’t Get the Email?
This happens all the time — don’t panic.

You can still renew by:

Logging in directly to the NJ portal
Starting your renewal once the cycle opens
Completing all steps and paying the fee

Your agency still needs to verify you — but the email notice is not required to begin.

Being a CNA can be tiring, but it depends on your schedule and limits.

The shifts can be busy and physical, and if you overload yourself, school will suffer.

But many students choose part-time or weekend shifts and manage well.

If you know your limits and put school first, CNA work can actually help you—not drain you.

You’d be surprised—many hospitals hire students even without CNA training.

A lot of hospitals allow nursing students to work as Patient Care Techs or Nurse Aides as long as they’ve finished basic clinical skills in school.

Some even provide training on the job.

It depends on the hospital, but yes, it’s possible to get experience without paying for a CNA course first.

Clinicals feel confusing at first? CNA experience makes it less overwhelming.

When you’ve already bathed patients, taken vitals, helped with mobility, and talked to people in real bedside situations, you’re not starting from zero.

You already understand how a hospital works and what patients need.
It doesn’t make nursing school “easy,” but it removes a lot of the fear and guesswork.
