The September issue of Rhode Island Monthly has dropped and includes their annual Excellence in Nursing awards, highlighting healthcare heroes in 15 categories from around the state. We're thrilled that Michelle Blade Mello, DNP, FNP-C, CNM, associate medical director of our West Warwick health center, has been voted the top nurse practitioner!

Michelle wears many hats and is a dual-certified family nurse practitioner and nurse midwife, which she says she chose because "it allows me to build lasting relationships with patients and families, supporting them through every stage of life."

A big congratulations to Michelle for this well-deserved honor and to all the other nurses highlighted in the magazine this month. Thanks for all you do. πŸ’™

Our approach, which utilizes a team model, helps everyone achieve the goals they set for themselves with support from their healthcare team, as well as their loved ones.

It's never too late to celebrate great work that Thundermist employees do!

During National Health Center Week in August, representatives from community health centers around Rhode Island and others came together to celebrate Beacon Award honorees. The Beacon Awards recognize individuals from the eight community health centers in the state for their commitment to the center's mission and values. We were proud this year to honor Manager of Healthcare Data Analytics James Tringale. While his work can often seem to happen behind the scenes, James is an important and integral part of Thundermist’s overall operations and success. We are so thankful to have him as a colleague. Congratulations, James!

James is pictured here at the event with CEO Chuck Jones, as well as with other Beacon Award honorees; RI Health Center Association President and CEO Elena Nicolella; RI House Speaker Joe Shekarchi; and members of the RI congressional delegation.

Save the date! International Overdose Awareness Day will be observed on September 4 in Rhode Island.

Our friends at Health Equity Zone West Warwick will be hosting events on 9/4 to honor loved ones, offer support services, and take action to prevent overdose. From 12-4 p.m.. there will be an open house at 1229 Main St, where people can connect with local resources and receive Narcan/naloxone. At 6 p.m., there will be a remembrance ceremony at the Arctic Gazebo to honor those we've lost. There will be food and refreshments available at both events.

You can find details on statewide naloxone giveaways, vigils, and more by visiting Prevent Overdose RI’s events calendar here: https://preventoverdoseri.org/events-calendar/. While numbers of accidental overdoses have dropped a bit, about 330 Rhode Islanders died last year. Remember to carry Narcan and be aware of the signs of overdose. The PORI website has many other resources. In addition, we provide substance use treatment as part of our primary care services. See more at www.thundermisthealth.org/services/obat/.

Last Saturday our West Warwick medical center was a host site for the annual statewide Back to School Celebration of RI. We had perfect weather, a great soundtrack going, and lots of partner organizations on site to welcome students and families and provide free backpacks and school supplies. A big thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who made the day go so smoothly. It was wonderful to see so many folks come out. Wishing the best to all the students starting school across the state. We'll see you next year!

Last week we celebrated the graduation of our five family medicine and psychiatric nurse practitioner fellows! The fellowships from which they graduated are 12-month programs that help nurse practitioners in these fields develop skills to deliver comprehensive care as leaders of robust care teams in a community health setting. The fellowships are accredited by the Consortium for Advanced Practice Providers. All five graduating fellows (pictured here with families as well as colleagues and fellowship preceptors) will be staying on to provide care at Thundermist. Congratulations to all of them!

Did you know? 35 years ago this week, Congress enacted the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act, the landmark legislation that created the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program, which provides critical care and support services for people living with HIV.

Named for an Indiana teenager who contracted HIV from a blood transfusion in the 1980s, the Ryan White program offers both medical and non-medical care and support services to those who need them. Thundermist receives Ryan White funding and provides a variety of important services for people living with HIV, including medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare, as well as non-medical services such as insurance and benefits enrollment services, access to medications, nutrition assistance, and much more.

Individuals interested in learning more or receiving services can call us at 401-767-4100 to get connected with our Ryan White team. You do not need to be insured to receive care. ❀️
