Struggling with seasonal allergies + chestfeeding or pumping? Here are some things to be mindful of!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You’ll want to avoid decongestants containing pseudoephedrine when possible. Although many are thought to be safe for a chestfed infant, it can reduce supply up to 24% according to research. It is also often used to decrease milk supply for folx with oversupply or who are needing to wean quickly. Some people don’t experience much change (if any) and others may notice a significant reduction even from a single dose. If you have identified a change after taking medications containing pseudoephedrine, you’ll want to stop immediately and work on building your supply up again through frequent milk removal. If you have supply concerns, I would advise avoiding decongestants completely.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Non-sedating antihistamines are often preferred, but be on the look out for these medications also containing the decongestant pseudoephedrine (often labelled with a “D” or Sinus ie Claritin-D, Allegra-D, Reactine Complete Sinus + Allergy, Aerius Double-Action Sinus + Allergy). These contain different antihistamines (Cetirizine, Fexofenadine, Loratadine etc.) and although their effects on the chestfeeding dyad have not been extensively studied, levels in milk are thought to be low. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nasal sprays are generally compatible with chestfeeding but it is advised to use decongestant sprays for a short period of time. Corticosteroid nasal sprays (Ie Flonase) and cromolyn sodium nasal spray (ie Nasalcrom) are considered to be some of safest. A non-medicated option would be brands such as Hydrasense Allergy for congestion.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Always consult with your primary health care provider before taking any medications!

Friends and family who bring food to new parents are THE best. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Trying to figure out dinner after a long day of caring for a newborn can seem impossible.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thankfully, postpartum doulas can help with light meal planning and preparation so that you have healthy options to nourish you and help you recover from birth and the intensity of caring for a new baby.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While you rest, I’ll fill your crockpot so the house smells amazing and a warm simple meal is ready for you in the evening. 🍽⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ll even wash the containers from your generous friends and family who are supporting you as well! 🧽⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a postpartum doula, I focus on YOU. 💗 I make sure you're staying hydrated and eating healthy, nourishing food so that you feel your best. 🧘🏼‍♀️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Listening, validating and reassuring new parents is a big part of what I do as a postpartum doula.

There's so much to process and talk through after welcoming a baby into the world, but in our society we rarely get a chance to do that.

Postpartum doulas listen without judgement.

And the good news is that I can still do this virtually!

Sitting with a family on the couch with a cup of tea, a reassuring hug and no mask is optimal. Unfortunately that still isn’t really happening quite yet.

Raising a tiny human through a global pandemic, managing mental health issues, working through infertility, caring for elderly family members - what ever it is, “you get strong by doing the things you need to be strong for.” 💪🏼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When it comes to making any decision, I like to follow and share the BRAIN model. This model helps keep it simple and leaves room for your intuition, too.

This may not be a tool you need to use and decision-making may come relatively easy to you, but a lot of families, particularly those in the prenatal and postnatal period may find this helpful. The BRAIN model can help sift through the noise to help decide what feels best, especially because folx are bombarded with so much information.

B ➡️ What are the benefits?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
R ➡️ What are the risks?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A ➡️ What alternatives are these?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I ➡️ What does your intuition tell you?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
N ➡️ What happens if you do nothing at all?

Will we always make the “right” choice? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Following this model can help ensure that we make the choice that is best for our family. 💗

Is my baby eating enough?

Is the umbilical stump supposed to look like this?

Do other parents feel like they are losing their minds?

Is this normal?

I love answering ALL the new caregiving questions. As a postpartum doula, I'm not a medical professional but I am very familiar with what's normal and what's worth a call to the pediatrician. ☎️ I also love talking through all the thoughts + emotions that might be running through your head. 💭

Postpartum doulas provide non-judgmental support and resources when needed.

What was your biggest question in the first days home with your baby?
