If you are experiencing…

Racing thoughts
Muscle tension
Difficulty taking a deep breath
Racing heart
Restlessness
Overwhelm
Difficulty relaxing
Stiff posture
Anxiety

…your nervous system might be in fight or flight (aka sympathetic activation)

And this isn’t a bad thing in of itself ! Our sympathetic nervous system helps us MOBILIZE in response to threats, ensuring our survival. But it also helps with things like getting up in the morning, moving, and managing our body temperature and circulation of blood.

Our sympathetic nervous system is ESSENTIAL to optimal functioning.

Where you start to run into trouble is when you get “stuck” in sympathetic activation and can’t regulate your nervous system to come back into a state of safety. This can be caused by chronic stress, trauma, and lifestyle habits that keep you in a state of stress.

If you’ve tried fixing your problems (mental, physical, etc.) with alllll of the things you can think of (diet, exercise, holistic remedies, alternative medicine) and you haven’t seen any improvement, you probably already know…

Sometimes, being in “fixing” mode can create even more resistance, frustration, and suffering.

I’ve been learning this the hard way these past few weeks. I used ALL of the tools in my toolkit to deal with some chronic pain and inflammation I’ve been experiencing. I did the hot baths with epsom salts, I did the yoga, I danced, I cried, I used my nervous system regulation strategies….

Spoiler: nothing worked.

So I turned to the simplest and simultaneously most complicated tool I know: I sat with it. I allowed myself to FEEL it.

You see, by being in that “fixing” mode and having that mindset of trying to get rid of what was ailing me, I was avoiding actually feeling it.

So I leaned into the pain to see what it had to tell me instead of resisting it so strongly. I said hello to it. I got curious about it. I asked my body what wanted to be seen and acknowledged in that moment.

And a truly surprising thing happened: it started to ebb, my body started to relax. Where there previously was rigidity and tension, there was a softening, an opening.

By bringing awareness to it instead of avoiding it, I created an opportunity for my body to begin to process and metabolize whatever needed to just be seen and witnessed.

I am consistently humbled by the wisdom and intelligence of our bodies. They know how to heal. They just need us to listen.

Why even bother with somatic healing and nervous system regulation? What’s the point of it??

When we don’t properly process and manage stress/trauma/difficult emotions in our everyday lives, it can cause mental and physical health issues in the future. Not only that, it affects the way we feel on a daily basis, respond to the world around us, and relate to others.

Somatic healing and nervous system regulation help us rewrite the narrative we have become attached to (and that is reflected in the body) and rewire our system to better manage and release stress. We become more free, more embodied, more in tune with our inner wisdom, and more present.

Not to be dramatic or anything, but this work has changed my life. I hope that it will give you the tools to change yours, too. ✨

The most common question I get in the work I do is…

“So, what even IS somatics?”

I like to begin by breaking down the word “somatic,” which means “of, relating to, or affecting the body.”

In my years of studying and integrating this work, I’ve come to understand it as a coming back home to the body. It’s not just a practice, but a way of understanding your body that changes how you respond to stress, relate to the people around you, and process difficult emotions.

Essentially, it has the power to create powerful shifts in the way you move through the world (I know it has for me).

Somatics can, however, feel so abstract and inaccessible beyond the bite-sized practices and exercises you see on social media.

That’s why I created the Somatic Contemplations Podcast…to take you along with me on my own journey of creating more ease in my body, discovering how full and joyful life can be, and understanding how we can spark healing change in our communities (and maybe even the world!) by coming back home to our bodies.

I’ll be sharing solo episodes (first episode is out now! see link in bio) that pull from my own training and experiences, as well as episodes with guest experts and community leaders who are DOING THE WORK.

Come on this journey with me as we explore the messiness of the human experience and the breadth of what we (and our bodies) are capable of.

If you’re not sure where to start, use the link in bio to listen to my first episode, Coming Back Home to the Body, and hit subscribe to get notified when the next episode drops.

Much love,

The Somatic Contemplations Podcast is officially live on Spotify!!! 🎉

In the coming months, I’ll be sharing solo and guest episodes that center around the theme of coming back home to the body, which - surprise surprise - is the name of the first episode!

In this podcast, I’ll be discussing WHY coming back home to the body and developing body awareness is so important (hint: it has the ability to completely change the way you live your life) and HOW we can even begin that process

Tune into this first episode, subscribe, and share with your friends! And stay tuned for upcoming episodes on breathwork, nervous system regulation, healing self-touch, and so much more! (Link in bio)

I am so excited and honored to be facilitating a workshop about the power of touch, nervous system regulation, and polyvagal theory at Living Dream Festival on April 29th!

One of the reasons I’m so passionate about nervous system regulation is because it has the power to change not just your own life, but the lives of those around you as well (we’ll talk more about this in the workshop).

This workshop is a chance for you to come back home to your body and release tension through healing self touch. We’ll do a deep dive into how you can work with your nervous system to regulate yourself through gentle practices and techniques that you can use in your everyday life.

We’ll explore polyvagal theory, bodywork techniques, the power of touch, various nervous system regulation tools, and what it means to be present with the body.

Living Dream is an intentional community gathering based around mental health awareness, psychology, environmentalism, activism, social justice, and sustainable living.

This gathering will include live music, arts, connection, and workshops that inspire creativity, transformation, and connection.

You can get your tickets at DreamGatherings.org 🦋✨

Ever wondered what the heck ‘somatic healing’ is???

It’s everything I wrote in the photos above, but it’s alsoso much more…

It’s the joining of mind and body, a settling into presence, a tapping into the power of the wisdom that lies within you.

It’s a leveraging of your self-healing processes and a journey back to your innate wholeness. ✨

I (as I’ve noticed many healers and coaches have also expressed) have been feeling a pull to facilitate group healing sessions again, like the virtual meditation circles I was hosting last fall and winter. The manifestation of that desire is Soma Circle, a virtual collective that has been in the works for quite awhile now.

It’s the perfect place to start if you’re wanting to dip your toes into the world of somatic healing. I’ll be sharing weekly practices you can do at home to build your toolkit, members-only workshops, and much more.

DM me or check the link in bio if you want to know more!

Much love and happy Tuesday! 💕✨

I think it’s safe to say that somatic healing and nervous system regulation transformed my life.

It changed how I relate to my body and the world around me.

It expanded my understanding of how to manage stress and make little tweaks to my habits and lifestyle in order to optimize how my body is working.

It changed how I view mental health and my understanding of the mind-body connection.

But, most of all, it changed how I experience life on a daily basis - full of play, joy, pleasure, and balance.

Perhaps my favorite part of somatic healing is supporting clients in their own journey. If this work is calling to you, reach out to me via email or DM and let’s get started!

What I love about mindfulness and somatic work is that it requires you to notice what is happening within your mind and body from an observer’s point of view. It requires a commitment to divest from the dualities of right and wrong, good and bad, healed and broken…

When you do this work, you learn to practice radical acceptance of what is here now.

Instead of labeling pain, gaps in awareness, tension, or other symptoms you might be experiencing as “bad,” “wrong,” or “in need of fixing,” you learn to accept yourself as you are, where you are now and GET CURIOUS. Ask your body, “What are you trying to tell me through this pain, tension, anxiety, numbness, etc.?”

When we create this nonjudgmental space to be in relationship with our body, we open ourselves up to more opportunities to respond to what’s happening within ourselves. We begin to have more options to choose from.

For example, if your immediate reaction to a racing heart and muscle tension is to get really tired and want to take a nap (which could possibly be a shutdown response caused by dorsal vagal activation), bringing awareness and radical acceptance to what you are experiencing can allow you to better respond to your body’s needs (i.e., doing some practices that regulate your nervous system so that you can ease the racing heart and muscle tension while also increasing energy levels).

So the real question is: what does this process realistically look like in our day-to-day lives and how can we begin to interpret the signals our body is sending us?

I’m glad you asked 😉

I’m hosting a free virtual workshop called Learning the Language of Your Body on January 18th.

This is how I use holistic and somatic interventions to shift out of anxious and depressed states (updated version):

When speaking about my services, I often mention that I help people create systems and strategies for themselves that help them regulate their nervous systems and reach their wellness goals. You might be thinking, "WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!" Below is a process that is an example of that.
......................................................................................
*I am not a doctor or licensed medical professional. Please see a doctor or therapist if you are suicidal or have trouble with daily functioning.*......................................................................................

BACKGROUND INFO ON NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION:
Instead of referring to these states as “anxiety” and “depression,” I like to refer to them as activation of the sympathetic and dorsal vagal states, respectively.

Essentially, when we experience or perceive a stressor, our sympathetic nervous system becomes activated. When our capacity to experience and process stress reaches max capacity, our dorsal vagus nerve (one branch of the parasympathetic nervous system) is activated and we may experience a state of shutdown in our body’s attempt to conserve resources.

Both states can also become chronically activated. This can be why anxious and depressed states are so difficult to recover from.

The goal is to activate the ventral vagus nerve (second branch of the parasympathetic nervous system). This is the state we often refer to when we say “rest and digest.” This is overly simplifying it a bit, but for the purpose of this post, it’ll have to do.................................................................................

PROCESS TO SHIFT OUT OF ANXIOUS & DEPRESSED STATES (aka sympathetic and dorsal vagal states):

1. Notice how you’re feeling and the state of your nervous system.

Are you anxious, calm, on the verge of a panic attack, slightly tired and unmotivated, on the verge of shutdown, etc.? This helps you become aware of where you actually are and allows you to choose actions/interventions that will most supportive and effective.

2. Use a low energy/time intervention.

For me, this has always been deep breathing because you don’t need a lot of energy, time, or space to do it. This low energy/time intervention is meant to be the first step in regulating your nervous system when you don’t have a lot of energy, time, or space to give to regulating. It’s kind of like the band-aid until you have more time/energy/space for regulating yourself.

3. Use a mid-level energy/time intervention.

The purpose of this is to further solidify and deepen your experience of the ventral vagal state (aka rest and digest) that you activated with the first intervention. For me, this can be something like going on a walk, taking a shower, doing some light stretching, etc. It’s important to get your body moving here.

4. Once you’re starting to feel lighter (as opposed to the heaviness associated with a depressed state) or calmer/more grounded (as opposed to the “fight/flight/freeze/appease” we experience in an anxious state), I encourage you to employ a higher level time/energy intervention.

For me, this could be something like going for a jog to mobilize stuck energy or get more happy hormones pumping through my body. For others, this might mean doing some cleaning, making a nourishing meal, or whatever is going to make you feel good and support regulation of your nervous system.............................................................................................

A COUPLE NOTES:
*Somatic and movement interventions (anything that involves moving or working with the body in some way) will be most effective, but something like watching something funny or thinking of someone you love can also be helpful.

*It’s important to get help from your support system if you feel like you can’t motivate or mobilize yourself to complete this process (especially when in a depressed state).

*Nervous system regulation is an ongoing process. Expect to have to repeat this sequence of interventions or try other techniques and tools that help regulate the nervous system.

*It’s good to create a toolkit or plan/protocol BEFORE you start to feel badly. AND revisit your plan when you don’t feel 100%. This takes some experimentation and you’ll find that you might not be able to use the same tools or techniques each time.

This is where somatic healing, nervous system regulation work, and body awareness come in. I have some free/low cost workshops coming up and I also offer 1:1 coaching on the topics of nervous system regulation, stress management, and somatic healing.

Please reach out if you need help. Don’t suffer alone. ❤️
