For 24-year-old Justin Miller of Spring Grove, Thanksgiving 2025 is shaping up to be vastly different from Thanksgiving 2024 – and he’s keeping gratitude at the very center of his celebration.

One year ago, Justin’s family was frantically making their way to WellSpan York Hospital after they had been notified that he was in a car accident. Upon their arrival, they learned that Justin suffered a traumatic brain injury with a frontal skull fracture, lung contusions and multiple open fractures in his legs.

Last week, following a year-long critical care journey at WellSpan York Hospital and subsequent rehabilitation at WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital, Justin returned as the walking representation of the lifesaving care provided by our teams. He walked through many of the units where, he says, his memories are a bit blurry – hugging team members who were integral in his care and getting to know the people who helped to shape his recovery.

“To see one of the patients we cared for, back to being themselves and showing gratitude, leaves me speechless,” said Jillian Stanely, nurse manager within the open heart and cardiac intensive care units at WellSpan York Hospital. “This is a wholesome moment that we don’t always get to see, but it reaffirms our purpose and inspires us to continue delivering the highest level of care for every patient.”

During this week of thanks, we share our sincere gratitude with our community for allowing us to be a part of both your triumphant times, and the days overwhelmed with challenge.

Going wild in the aisles!

Led by Jeni Smith and Kristi Stine, WellSpan primary care leaders in Franklin and Cumberland counties, team members came together for a team building to remember and an opportunity to give back to their local communities.

Inspired by the once popular show, Supermarket Sweep, team members worked together in pairs to navigate the aisles of their local Weis Markets, gathering nonperishable goods for families in need this holiday season.

After all the goods were gathered, the team delivered them to Franklin Fire Company in Chambersburg, Pa. for an upcoming distribution. It was a creative take on team building and a meaningful contribution!

WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital Emergency Department nurses Carrie Derse and Morgan Wallech saw firsthand how pressure can take a toll on caregivers.

Backed by hospital leaders, they set out to create something special: a space dedicated to restoring balance.

“When we started the project, we said if we’re going to do this, we’re going to do it right,” Carrie explained. “We want this to be a place where team members can truly pause, breathe and recharge.”

So fresh and so squeaky clean! 🫧

During a recent Wheelchair Wash and Tune event at WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital, community members and patients joined our team to enjoy refreshments while their wheelchairs were tidied and minor adjustments were made to keep each chair operating comfortably.

We were to represent at the recent Careers Within the World of Health event at Byrnes Health Education Center. Our team had the privilege of introducing local students to the many exciting and life-changing paths the world of health care has to offer.

Meet the 8-year-old using his big heart to make big change!

Noah Robinson is a York, Pa. local who recently stopped by the WellSpan York Cancer Center to deliver quite the surprise – a check for $1,460 to contribute to the WellSpan York Cancer Patient Help Fund!

Noah worked to save his money to buy an RC Crawler – the truck he held in this photo. He decorated the pink truck in honor of three loved ones whose lives have been impacted by cancer. Then he got creative – posting a fundraiser to social media where he maneuvered the truck through obstacles and over rocky terrain. His original goal was $300 – but the community showed up to celebrate this young man’s generous spirit.
