Nobody thought it was possible.
But on May 25, 1986, something happened in America that has never happened anywhere in the world before or since.
At exactly 3:00 in the afternoon, five million people stepped outside — out of their homes, their routines, and their differences — and reached for the hand of a stranger.
From the southern tip of Manhattan, where a six-year-old homeless girl named Amy Sherwood started the chain, all the way to the sun-drenched shores of Long Beach, California — an unimaginable line of human beings stretched 4,125 miles across the continent. Through 16 states. Across the Mississippi River. Through the shadow of the Gateway Arch. Past the Lincoln Memorial. Right through the gates of the White House, where even the President and First Lady stepped outside to join hands.
This was Hands Across America.
It was imperfect. In the desert Southwest, the line had gaps — filled in by ribbons and ropes and sheer stubbornness. It raised $15 million for food banks and shelters, far less than the $100 million organizers had dreamed of. By every spreadsheet measure, it fell short.
But no spreadsheet could measure what really happened that day.
A farmer in Kansas stood next to a teacher from Chicago. Divers held hands underwater in Maryland. A child who had never met a celebrity found herself beside Lionel Richie. An elderly woman who had lived through the Great Depression stood tall in the sunshine and said, without words, I still believe in this country.
For fifteen minutes, ordinary people — not governments, not corporations, not algorithms — physically held this nation together.
The chain may have had gaps. But the feeling didn't.
Nearly four decades later, in a world that sometimes feels like it is coming apart at the seams, that Sunday afternoon in May still whispers something important:
We have done this before.
We reached out.
We held on.
And the hand we grabbed? It was warm.
It was real.
It was human.
We can do it again.

Look: the city selects random sidewalks with patchwork repair. In 2018, there was talk (YNDC) of an apprentice who would repair sections —- never happened. I hired a guy to do 3 rough sections. The city finally replaced the grass covered, broken sidewalks in 2025! BUT, they left some unreplaced sidewalks that continue to sink. Choice: soak shoes or trip onto high elevated grass. Looks like I’ll need to dig a trench (again) to get the water to drain into the street 🙄
Yeah, I know … I’m not on payroll 🤔

Its been over 3 years since the water main broke on this end of the street. It’s time for the ol’ city to fix poorly repaired roads. Unless this may not be the “select” side of the street 🧐

When the old sycamore trees overtake the road with their debris: leaves, branches. the roots break through clay sewer pipes. Its past time for the ol’ city to repair overdue infrastructure. P.S. I’m not on payroll . . .

History, through architecture worth preserving. Restore, rebuild with what is already here.

04/07/2026

Buildings were demolished. Wildlife returned after losing their habitat. Developers took the land again, only this time with BIG duplexes, shopping centers, plazas. "We" took over THEIR (animals) play area more than twice.
There are plenty of restorable houses. There are sufficient parks everywhere. Few children/adults use the parks. Is this because the human predator is infiltrating the open, free space and safety is the concern? Now too many times when it's not even safe for humans to play in parks. Have we "evolved" into a sedentary, techno society? What do YOU think is happening?

Its been over 3 years since the water main broke on this end of the street. Last summer city employee couldn’t even locate the sewer access entry hole. It was covered with grass, roots, debris and previous half-done repair. They finally located, dug out, and marked it with bright green paint. It’s way past time for the ol’ city to fix poorly repaired infrastructure.

Here is another example of abandonment, neglect, destruction — instead of restoration. This problem appears to be prominent in many cities across Ohio.

revitaLIE$ation is NOT the solution.

Accept help from “out-of-towners” who see the charm and potential to repair and restore? bale out? Gentrification?

Teach and train youth to respect architecture along side materialism/consumerism of mass produced manufactured things.

Who starts the process? “Non-profit” organizations win grants to build project places while they take pride out of individual’s ownership — only to promote their agenda and line their pockets.

Start from within — and on the street of concern. Provide residents with resources and assistance to fix their own neighborhoods.

Preservation of architecture empowers residents to fulfill their future with pride in ownership. The identity of a community is built on buildings and businesses that serve the neighborhoods.

Snow needs a place to go as it melts or roads become sheets of ice! I’ve maintained the street drain since relocating here. Sure wish plow hadn’t coved the leaf trench made to guide the water from rain. Fortunately, I was able to find the drain grate after two weeks. Now we’re ready for a sunny day to melt this mess.

Clearing a path for pedestrians to around the HUGE mound of snow shoved on corner by plows. Had to shovel part of path on top of grass to create the path. It is uncorfortable to see — and absolutely NOT
safe for people to walk on the streets to get around the city. Will finish remainder of the single path
next day.

Here are the deer tracks in the driveOHround — the only living beings to get through 12-14” of snow. Sorry the driveway is not yet available for customers to use. The plows cleared the street, but blocked our entrance AND piled a huge mound of snow on the corner where folks get the bus. I’m not able to dig a tunnel through the mound, but hope to shovel the grass around the snow boulder to open access to the sidewalk. We’re not “out of the woods” with snow yet!

You can order baked items to go, and pick up from the front of the guesthouse. The rooms are warm and cozy 😉

“Old homes” are absolutely worth training crafts builders to learn the skills to RESTORE houses in our towns / cities. Citizens could feel the connection with their heritage with the pride of accomplishment as they contributed to uplifting their community.

02/03/2026

It is common to see Mill Creek Park deer in our neighborhoods. In previous years there was space between the remaining original vacant homes. All those homes were demolished (claims were that it would cost too much to fix/restore) A beautiful grassy knoll and new trees in front of the small forested area replaced the homes for a few years till “developers” decided to build 5, 2-story buildings. Here is a video of the displaced animals using my backyard as they find wild berries. So, not only did I become a “husky whisperer”, now my property provides a deer refuge 😳 …
it’s kinda cool (actually freezing). LOL

Spent hours shoveling snow to clear a path to the front door of the bakehouse for anyone who can safely drive or walk here to the Southside “food dessert” for mini wheat (semi-sourdough) bread. 10-15 minute wait time in oven. Sorry, I can’t (or afford to hire anyone) to clear the drivOHround parking area to back deck entrance — too much snow!

Text 330-333-1716 after noon so your bread is ready. PWYC (pay what you can)

Ready for baking — just need to do the wheat design

I know this is not the typical craftsman I share, but I really do love Tudor revivals too and they are apart of the Arts and Crafts era as well!

I just love that top little window and the curve to the front door! 🧡🧡🧡

even when a house seems beyond repair, preserve the exterior and redesign the interior while maintaining aspects of the original.

My dad handed me two clothespins. “This,” he said, “is the story of everything.”

In one hand: a clothespin from the 1960s. Solid hardwood, smooth from decades of use. It still works perfectly, some 60 years later.

In the other: a clothespin from 2025. Lighter, paler wood, brittle. The spring is thin and unstable. Marketed as “extra durable,” my dad just raised an eyebrow.

At first glance, it’s just two clothespins. But they tell a bigger story — the shift from durability to disposability, from craftsmanship to cost-cutting, from stewardship to constant consumption. This is planned obsolescence in action.

Products are designed to fail so we must keep buying. Slowly, subtly, they break. Frayed wires, cracked hinges, brittle springs. Not because we want more, but because the old was never built to last.

The costs are everywhere. Landfills overflow. Wallets empty. And maybe most quietly, our spirits grow accustomed to impermanence, to the idea that nothing is meant to endure.

What if this philosophy extends beyond objects? What if it shapes how we treat relationships, communities, homes, even the Earth — as temporary, replaceable, disposable?

It doesn’t have to be this way. That 1960s clothespin reminds us another path is possible. That we once made things to last, and we can again. That quality, care, and intention matter. That we can design for repair, for continuity, for meaning.

The story in my palm is about more than laundry. It’s about the choices we make — and the world they create.
