Have you been working out and doing all the things! Strength and cardio and flexibility, wahooo! You rock! But are you paying attention to fueling your body for all that hard work?

Have you been confused about what to eat before or after your workouts?

It's so confusing.

If you want the short and sweet....

Here is my recommendations after reading many articles and studies over the years plus working with tons of clients.

*Just to clarify, When I'm talking about a workout, I'm talking about something harder than an easy walk. I'm talking about a tough strength training class or a run, or bounce class, step class etc...

Key Concepts

You need to be fueled so you can do your best at your workout!
You need to send the signals to your body that you going to be fueled so it uses the good food you put in your body before and after.

Before:
Ideally eat a regular meal 2 hours or so before you workout so you have energy and strength! I'm not a fan of fasted training. (Exceptions are those of you who workout really early and know you will feel sick).

If you don't have time then grab a quick easily digestible source of carbs - banana, an apple etc...

After:
If you are eating a normal meal within one hour after your workout (A meal with protein, veggies, and carbs) then you are probably good!

If it's going to be more than an hour then you should plan a post workout snack. This snack should have protein and carbs and its ok if it has some fats but I wouldn't just do fats. So a handful of nuts is not adequate.

Examples of post workout snacks to tide you over until next meal:

Protein powder mixed with water and a banana on the side - this is my go to because it's portable and easy!
Yogurt or cottage cheese with berries and a little granola
Overnight Oats with yogurt or some protein powder and some fruit
Meat Jerky with some fruit
One of the protein bars we sell at the studio
If you still have questions try the article I mentioned above or get with a nutritionist or dietician to make sure you are adequately fueling yourself!

📷 Photo is of my favorite. Chocolate Protein powder with day old coffee and some non-dairy milk and then I usually eat a banana on the side. This protein drink is like an iced mocha. Yum.

This 3-hour boundary setting, personal safety and self defense class will teach you the basics— and add to existing skills for your personal empowerment. This workshop will include information about, and practice with, skills on mental preparedness, verbal assertiveness and physical self protection. This workshop is open to female identifying persons age 13 and over.

This class is being taught by Heidi Sproull. Heidi is a black belt in Jiu Jitzu and a brown belt in Judo, with 30 years of experience teaching these skills. She is also a trauma informed psychotherapist and certified s*x therapist and educator.

Verbal Skills:
Use your voice effectively
Effectively use deescalation techniques
Employ assertive, direct language

Mental Skills:
Cultivate self-confidence and hone personal power
Set Boundaries
Use counter strategies for attacker mentality

Physical Skills:
All physical skills are carefully selected to be usable by a smaller, less strong defender against a larger, stronger attacker.
Most skills can be modified for differing ability levels.
We ran this class last year and everyone raved about how amazing it was and how much they learned.

Robin
I joined my first yoga class in 2006 as a competitive rower looking for injury prevention as I aged. I realized yoga offered much more than just physical poses, and I became smitten with the benefits. I decided to turn my passion into my career and founded Yoga Rising in 2013. I am currently working on my RYT 500 hour certification.
No matter your age or experience, my classes are designed to help you expand your flexibility and mobility in a way that’s both challenging and relaxing. My classes are an effective way to reduce injuries, increase balance, and extend longevity in your sport and beyond. I also bring my knowledge of Social Work & Experiential Education to give students well-rounded classes, a sense of community, and as much support as possible.

Joe
Your life doesn’t need to be all about fitness, but your fitness needs to be all about your life! My fitness philosophy is about your wellness and trying to help develop sustainable physical fitness that you find most fitting with your life, mentally and physically. I love helping clients find movements that work with them to expand their abilities. My training focus is dynamic fitness through resistance training, cardio, and stretching. I personally have interests in running, hiking, biking and yoga and tai chi. When not being active though I love a good book or movie/TV show and snuggling with my cats. Also all things pizza- I will never tell you to not eat pizza. Life is too short for that negativity.

Yoga Pop Up with Joe!

Today really feels like spring!

Welcome spring with some sun salutations! This is a practice to bring in the warmth and lighter days, normally done at sunrise or larger part of a yoga practice. Sun salutations are a standard series of poses linked with breath and mindfulness. After a warm up, we will go through the poses learning transitions and modifications. All levels welcome.

A couple weeks ago Joe posted a question in our Facebook community page.

What does Fitness mean to you?

Such a big question and it’s going to have a different answer depending on who you ask.

If you ask me it’s
Strength to do what I love
Flexibility to move freely
Stamina and Endurance to keep up

What does it mean to you? Leave a comment 🙏🤗

If you are working on your strength and mobility and want to join me tomorrow/Tuesday I’m offering a $1 demo of a new class. It’s a format I’ve been playing with for a few months and I’m expired to see if you all like it.
