“But my sugar has been well controlled lately.”

This is one of the most common things Dr. Onu hears from patients with diabetic eye disease.

But the eye has a long memory.

Years of elevated blood sugar leave damage in the retinal blood vessels that persists even after sugar levels improve. Researchers call this “metabolic memory.”

This is why annual dilated eye examinations are essential for EVERY diabetic patient — regardless of how well controlled your sugar currently is.

Past damage doesn’t disappear when numbers improve. But future damage can be prevented.

Every person with diabetes has eyes that are at risk.

Not might be at risk. ARE at risk.

Diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels that supply the retina. This is called diabetic retinopathy — and it progresses in stages, silently, for years before you notice anything.

Mrs. Miller came in with reading difficulty after 11 years of diabetes and never having had a dilated eye examination. What Dr. Onu found was significant damage in both eyes.

She needed urgent laser treatment.

“How could this have happened without me knowing?” she asked.

Because no one had looked.

If you have diabetes — get your eyes checked. Every year. No exceptions.

A patient came to see Dr. Onu after a minor traffic incident. He hadn’t seen a vehicle approaching from his right side. He was certain the other driver was at fault.

But during the examination, something important was discovered: he had significant peripheral vision loss in his right eye — consistent with advanced glaucoma.

He had no idea. He had been driving with a visual field defect for years.

The brain is remarkably good at filling in the gaps. That’s why so many people lose vision without realising it.

This is why we check. This is why the examination matters.

“I can see fine” is never quite the whole story.

⚠️ EMERGENCY WARNING ⚠️

If you or someone you know experiences any of these — go to an eye doctor or emergency room IMMEDIATELY:

🚨 Sudden severe eye pain with nausea or vomiting
🚨 Coloured halos around lights
🚨 Sudden blurred vision
🚨 A red eye that came on suddenly

These are the signs of an acute angle-closure glaucoma attack — a true eye emergency.

Do NOT go home to sleep it off. Do NOT wait until morning. Eye pressure can reach dangerous levels within hours, causing permanent vision loss.

Get to an eye doctor immediately.

If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, your eye drops are not optional.

Mr. H.W. had been prescribed drops for years. He took them — but not consistently. When he was busy, he forgot. When the bottle ran out, he waited a few days.

When Dr. Onu examined his visual fields, the damage was significant. He had lost a large arc of peripheral vision — the kind that makes it difficult to navigate stairs, drive confidently, or see someone approaching from the side.

“But I have no pain,” he said. “I feel fine.”

That is the cruelty of glaucoma. It waits quietly while life carries on.

The non-negotiables for glaucoma patients:
✅ Take drops at the same time every day
✅ Never stop because you “feel fine”
✅ Never run out — refill before the bottle is empty
✅ Attend every follow-up appointment

Consistency isn’t optional. It’s everything.

Did you know there are THREE different eye care professionals — and they do very different things?

👓 THE OPTICIAN
Fits and dispenses your glasses. Does not diagnose eye disease.

🔍 THE OPTOMETRIST
Examines your eyes, prescribes glasses, and detects conditions. Often your first point of contact.

🏥 THE OPHTHALMOLOGIST
A medical doctor trained in eye medicine AND surgery. Can diagnose and treat eye diseases, prescribe medications, and perform operations.

Dr. Kenneth Onu is an ophthalmologist — which means if something is found, he can do something about it.

Are you at risk for glaucoma? Here are the factors that increase your chances:

🔴 People of African or Caribbean origin
🔴 Anyone over the age of 40
🔴 A family history of glaucoma
🔴 Elevated eye pressure — even without current damage
🔴 Thin corneas
🔴 A history of eye injury
🔴 Long-term steroid use

If any of these apply to you or someone you love — please don’t wait.

Glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages. The only way to find it is to look.

And here’s the good news: caught early, glaucoma can be managed effectively. Vision loss can be prevented. But once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Glaucoma is called “the sneak thief of sight” — and for good reason.

No pain. No blurred vision. No warning of any kind.

By the time a patient notices their vision is changing, they have often already lost 40% or more of their optic nerve fibres.

Those fibres do not grow back. That vision does not return.

This is why glaucoma is so serious — and why catching it early is everything.

People of African and Caribbean origin are at significantly higher risk. Glaucoma occurs earlier in our population, progresses faster, and tends to be more severe.

If you are over 40, or if glaucoma runs in your family — do not wait for symptoms. There won’t be any.

MYTH: “If I can see fine, my eyes must be healthy.”

This is perhaps the most dangerous misconception in eye care.

Two of the most serious eye conditions — glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy — cause NO symptoms whatsoever in their early stages. By the time your vision changes, significant and irreversible damage has often already been done.

Feeling fine is not the same as being fine.

Regular eye examinations are the only way to catch these conditions before they steal your sight.

Do you know what your eye doctor is actually checking when you come in for an examination?

It’s a lot more than just reading a chart. A thorough eye examination includes:

✅ The clarity and curvature of your cornea
✅ The health of your conjunctiva and eyelids
✅ The condition of your lens (checking for cataracts)
✅ The pressure inside your eye (checking for glaucoma)
✅ Your retina — including the macula and peripheral areas
✅ Your optic nerve — shape, colour, and margins
✅ Your eye movements and alignment
✅ Your full visual field

At Beachmont Eye Institute, we don’t cut corners. We check everything.

Because what we find — or don’t find — matters for the rest of your life.

MYTH: “20/20 means perfect vision.”

Not quite.

20/20 measures how clearly you can see a specific target at a specific distance. That’s it.

It tells us nothing about:
👁️ Peripheral vision
👁️ Eye pressure
👁️ The health of your retina
👁️ The condition of your optic nerve
👁️ Colour vision or depth perception

A person can have 20/20 vision and still be quietly losing their sight to glaucoma.

A proper eye examination covers all of this — not just the chart on the wall.

Don’t let a good reading at the optician give you false confidence. Come in for a full assessment.
