📢📢 Girlfriends, Let’s Stay Connected in Love & Liberation! 📢
This old page is gone after Sunday! ⏳ Don’t miss a beat—join the official Girlfriendism® Lifestyle page (the trademark is the difference!) for all the inspiring events, empowering news, and joyful surprises coming your way.
Take a look at this sign: “Slow Down. This is Our Neighborhood.” What makes this message so powerful? What stands out for me is the reminder that our bodies are our first neighborhood.
A neighborhood is a place we care for, protect, and nurture. It’s where we feel safe, rooted, and connected. It’s a space we tend to with love so life can thrive.
And just like any neighborhood, our bodies need us to slow down, pay attention, and honor what’s happening inside.
Your body is your temple. Your home. Your sacred space.
It deserves care. It deserves gentleness. It deserves presence.
So on this Soulful Sunday, take a moment to slow your pace, breathe deeper, and listen to what your neighborhood—your beautiful body—is asking for.
Move with kindness. Rest with intention. Love yourself with the same tenderness you’d give a community you cherish.
With love + liberation,
Your Girlfriend, Dr. K 💛🕊️

SoKh™ was developed in 2008 by our founder, Khnuma Simmonds, after she became certified with AFAA as a group fitness instructor. Initially, her aerobics certification was a pathway to quick and convenient money considering that she had just completed undergraduate school and was searching for work.
She noticed, however, that she didn't look forward to teaching and was generally 'in it' for the money. She would rejoice when students didn't show for the class as she would still get paid as long as she was present (shameful confession!).
Khnuma also noticed that while there were non-traditional group fitness classes such as Zumba, Crossfit, and Hip Hop Abs, they were generally developed by men. They also lacked the flair of her Afro-Caribbean culture.
Moreover, she also recognized that these programs featured women who didn't resemble her and most Caribbean women. Most of the women who represented these programs typically had flat abs, synthetic buttocks, lengthy weaves, and fair to light skin. She saw nothing wrong with any of these characteristics but hey simply didn’t represent the majority of women who are of Afro-Caribbean descent. These representations also didn’t support the Caribbean perspective of natural, God-given beauty.
As such, Khnuma began experimenting with SoKh™ (which was referred to as Soca Aerobics until 2012 when it was copyrighted as SoKh™). She has been in love with teaching ever since. The students who have joined her at the beginning of her journey have been loyal throughout and continue to be active participants in the SoKh™ community.
In 2017, Khnuma obtained the trademark for SoKh™ Caribbean Dance Fitness. Now she is on a mission to share this cultural experience with the world while helping women of all ages, sizes, and cultures to connect with their sensuality and embrace their natural beauty.
