One of the things that I’m working on in therapy is learning how to better regulate my emotions. Being someone who has struggled with anxiety, I am quick to react when I get triggered.

Lately, I have been practicing “putting myself in pause.” That means taking a breath or a step back instead of reacting emotionally. Learning how to pause is important because reacting quickly almost always backfires on me.

These 7 strategies have helped me practice the “pause.” I also find it helpful when I’m heading into a stressful situation (like hanging out with somebody who triggers me) to think about which one of these strategies I’m going to use if I find myself getting emotional. I can tell you I have never once regretted putting myself in pause. And I always regret saying something in the heat of the moment.
