🔬 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | VISHC SYMPOSIUM 2026

📍 Project: Accelerating Patient Rehabilitation via Wearable Filament Sensor Networks

How can wearable robotics help patients rehabilitate at home while still being monitored by clinicians?

📌 This VISHC research project develops a low-cost, soft wearable sensing system that combines filament sensors and AI-based feedback to turn daily home exercises into measurable, clinician-guided recovery. Designed for accessibility and real-world use, the project addresses key gaps in rehabilitation caused by cost, distance, and lack of feedback outside hospital settings.

📌 The project was featured as a key showcase at the VISHC Next-Gen Robotics Symposium 2026, highlighting how wearable robotics can translate research into real healthcare impact.

🔬 A CENTURY OF PHOTONICS SHAPING THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE DIAGNOSTICS

This October, scientists at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB), University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) gathered in Illini orange and blue to celebrate a new review paper and a century of photonics research for health.

In their Chemical Reviews article, “Photonic Crystal Grating Resonance and Interfaces for Health Diagnostic Technologies,” Prof. Brian Cunningham and Assoc. Prof. Xing Wang - both Principal Investigators at the VinUni–Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC), review the evolution of photonic crystal gratings. The paper shows how these nanoscale structures can help detect extremely low levels of disease biomarkers, from viruses to circulating tumor DNA.

By combining a historical overview, an “encyclopedic” summary of more than 100 studies, and a forward-looking view on clinical translation, the review highlights both the promise of PCGR biosensors and the remaining challenges in fabrication and regulation.
