~Benefits of a Birth Doula~

I am here to prepare you for birth and parenthood, support you during early labour, aiding you and your partner in the transition to hospital and providing continuous in person support until birth and beyond.

Studies have shown having a doula decreases the overall cesarean rate, the average length of labor, the use of oxytocin, and requests for an epidural! There is also evidence having a doula is more likely to increase the APGAR score of babies and the overall positive experience of birth from both parents.

I use massage, acupressure and optimal positioning, along with many years of experience and research supporting people in their transition to Parenthood, including preparation and feeding/ postpartum support. I am on hand to advocate for you and provide emotional assistance throughout such an important time.

Please contact me to discuss how I can best support your growing family.

~~~COLOSTRUM~~~
~what is it ?~
Colostrum is the gold coloured initial milk you make when pregnant and in the first few days after birth. It is full of nutrients, proteins, sugars and antibodies and it's often referred to as liquid gold !
~Why should I harvest it?~
It's great if you can have a small supply to give to baby in the first few days. Especially for mother's with gestational diabetes, babies with a lower birth weight or mum's who have been medicated with beta blockers in pregnancy to help regulate baby's blood sugar levels.
It also can help with giving all babies an extra energy boost, which can help them establish feeding. This can be really helpful if your baby is born very quickly, via c-section or an instrumental birth.
~How do I harvest it? ~
The best time to start is after 37 weeks of pregnancy. As sometimes ni**le stimulation can be known to induce labour!
Start by having a small sterilised cup and syringe. Relax and make yourself comfortable. Some people find a warm compress and massage around the breast really helpful too.
Make a C shape with your hand cupping around the breast just outside of your ar**la (not actually squeezing the ni**le) then compress the breast tissue and milk ducts between your thumb and fingers. Moving your hand to work your way around the breast. You may need to practice moving your hand placement slightly backwards or forwards to find the right spot for you!
Collect the droplets into the sterilised cup and then collect into the syringe. There are usually very small amounts to start with and this will increase after baby is born.
~Storing Colostrum~
Place the syringe into a small bag or Tupperware. Labelling each sample with the date and time of collection. Then place in the freezer (lasts around 6 months), in the coldest part of the refrigerator (6 days) and in a cool room (6 hours).
Just remember to add it last minute into your birth bag in labour !
Any questions about feeding, expressing or anything else pregnancy and baby related, please don't hesitate to get in contact! ❤️
