Govt Moves to Boost Cancer Care At Home
Port Vila, Vanuatu - February 6th, 2026 βPrime Minister Jotham Napat yesterday welcomed a medical team from India's Max Hospital and Pacific Medical Services (PMS), partnering with the Vanuatu National Hospital to establish Vanuatu's first ever dedicated chemotherapy unit.
"The establishment of this unit is a significant milestone in our efforts to provide quality healthcare to our people," said Prime Minister Napat. "I have directed Vanuatu National Hospital management to have the chemotherapy unit fully operational before the end of 2026."
The unit's setup is part of the Government's commitment to strengthening healthcare services, including the installation of kidney testing equipment at the national hospital where hitherto, have been non-existent with families needing specialized cancer treatment having to spend so much to travel overseas to places like India to seek medical help.
The Ik-Kana Cancer Foundation's donation of 3 million vatu towards mammogram and CT scan services for cancer patients was also acknowledged, with the Prime Minister expressing gratitude for the community's support during their participation in the Round Island Walkathon in 2025.
"This Government is committed to putting the health of our nation first," said PM Napat. "Together with our partners, we are building a future where no ni-Vanuatu has to leave our shores to access cancer treatment."
