Nutrition To Fit You Registered Dietitian and Registered Nurse: Digestive and Cardiovascular Wellness Specialist, Integrative/functional medicine practitioner

I like to give people the tools and skills to take care of their body. Eating should be easy, right!? The eating part is all too easy with food nearly at every street corner but our bodies also want to be nourished, which is a little trickier with so much conflicting information out there. Earlier in my career I practiced as a sports nutritionist, which gave me an excellent foundation for understanding how the body uses food and nutrients. I quickly developed an interest in a more holistic approach to health care and it has naturally led me to specialize in digestive and cardiovascular health; two systems of the body that are very much connected and clearly important to our well being. My goal is to help you feel well...take the necessary steps towards living a stronger, healthier life.

Fake meats and similar products are not succeeding not just because they don't taste good but because they do not nourish the body.

This paper addresses an even larger issue of pregnancy and a mostly plant based diet.

Animal products provide essential amino acids- the very substrate for growth, plus of course essential vitamins and minerals. Two nutrients (among many) most at risk, iron and B12, elevating risk for macro and microcytic anemias.

If eliminating all animal products, full understand your risks.

A reminder of the vast land and multi colors of sugar in our foods. Yes, this film ventures into the extreme but its point is well taken. What I liked is the recognition of one of America's emerging health concerns--Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease --basically liver inflammation. Maybe this film will help you rethink that next soda!

The Power of Food. Another reason to eat an apple a day--okay, it might take more than just an apple and the research is in mice but isn't this research about food just so cool! Scientists are discovering reasons why we lose muscle as we age--aside from because we may become slug-like. Age related muscle loss may be related to a protein, ATF4 that alters gene expression in skeletal muscle. And some food sources contain compounds such as ursolic acid in apple skins that turn down this gene expression--very cool!

Alternatives to long term use of gut unfriendly NSAIDS- chondroitin and glucosamine and Boswellia/Frankincense. All three have been around for ages but research reviews continue to show benefit. Boswellia works via different pathways from NSAIDS to reduce inflammation, so it may be safer long term. Careful of supplement quality; use reliable manufacturers. Also careful of any shellfish allergies when using chondroitin/glucosamine.

Plant Power

I've always believed in the power of food, especially fruits and vegetables! The broad array of phytonutrients in these foods is HUGE and over time, they are able to turn off toxic pathways and regulate a healthy body. But---you have to eat them--you can't just think about them or look at them. Two links below are about the amazing benefits of modified citrus pectin in cancer treatment and in detoxifying heavy metals. Aside from exercising regularly and not smoking, eating daily f/v with lots of different colors can be one of the best daily defenses against a tough world out there. Aim for 5-10 servings/day.

Interestingly, many of the new year resolutions mentioned in the Forbe's article below can be helpful in making those tricky nutrition and lifestyle changes.
