FAQ: Brand vs. Generic….is it really the same thing?

A brand name drug is a medicine product which has been originally discovered, developed and marketed by a pharmaceutical company. However, a generic name drug is a product which has the same active ingredients, contains the same strength, safety, side effects and risk as its brand equivalent and is less costly.

One of the main differences between brand name and generic name drugs is that the generic name drug is substantially cheaper, due to the fact that the manufacturers do not have the expenses of developing and marketing a new drug. Another variance that may impact the choice of a brand name verses a generic name drug, is the altered use of inactive ingredients such as fillers, colors and flavors in the manufacturing of a generic name drug to that of its brand counterpart.

The brand name and generic name drug are both approved by the food and drug administration (FDA). Therefore their pharmacological effects are the same. This ensures that they both have the same performance and quality.
