Dear Colleagues,

I have openings in my Thursday morning (10:15-11:45 AM Pacific time) training group for therapists. This is a dedicated group of folks who have been working deeply with me - some since we started in December of 2020. Please see the attached flyer for more information about the training groups I offer and contact me if you have any questions or are interested. I'd greatly appreciate you forwarding this information on to colleagues as well. Folks do not have to be group therapists but should be interested in their personal and professional development as therapists and in learning about groups.

Best,
Martha

Join the Sacramento Psychoanalytic Society on Friday, October 18th from 6 PM to 8 PM as we gather for an evening of wine, cheese, and talking about the magic and charm of process groups for therapists.

Research confirms that when experiential groups are part of therapists’ training, they have a significant positive impact on the personal and professional growth of the therapists. These groups have recently increased in popularity both because of the availability of online groups and the stresses of the pandemic. Conducting them online poses specific challenges that must be addressed. In this presentation, Martha Gilmore, PhD, and Haim Weinberg, PhD, will explore lessons learned from leading groups designed for therapists, review the literature about training process groups for therapists, and discuss the dilemmas that are part of these groups. Ethical questions and the difference between training process groups and therapy groups will be presented. During the presentation, a demonstration group with volunteers from the audience will be experienced. Observing and discussing this demo group will enrich the learning experience.

A significant piece of our here-and-now experience is becoming aware of the dynamics created by the conglomeration of our identities, cultural upbringings, and current social norms/expectations. Dr. Gilmore and Dr. Weinberg will call attention to recapitulations of power, privilege, and oppression as they arise in the group, acknowledging differences in identity, bias, and blind spots, to model vulnerability and help create a group climate of willingness to address difficult topics.

"Every therapist should have a therapy group for themselves to prevent burnout and for their continued professional and personal growth." — Irvin D. Yalom

He has received several awards including the Harold Bernard Group Psychotherapy Training Award and the Ann Alonso Award for Excellence in Psychodynamic Group Therapy.

Martha Gilmore, PhD, CGP, AGPA – Life Fellow is a licensed psychologist and Certified Group Psychotherapist with the Sacramento Center for Psychotherapy in Davis and Sacramento. She has over forty years of experience conducting psychotherapy groups and extensive experience in the training and supervision of group psychotherapy at local, national, and international levels. When it comes to grief, remember this:

You have not broken a bone.
There is no default treatment,
no cure,
no timeline
for your healing.

You cannot strap your heart to the heart next to it
and hope that it mends itself.

You cannot wrap it in a cast
and protect it from further breaking.

You cannot rest it for weeks or months.

You cannot rely on your other heart
like you might a leg or an arm.

You have not broken a bone.

And yet, like a broken bone, your heart will always now have a vulnerable spot. A bruise, a burn, a scar.

And just as your arm can still ache after breaking
when it has been holding too much for too long,
so your heart may ache.

When it has been holding too much.
For too long.

But just as your once-broken arm can still hold things and your once-broken leg can still dance,
so your heart will learn to carry you forward.

Even when it aches.

One of the best ways to develop professionally and personally is to participate in a training process group. The main goals of this group are to use the group process to explore and understand one's intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships and to learn about group dynamics through both the leader and member roles.

This group for therapists meets weekly and in the last ten minutes of each session we discuss the process of the group theoretically. While this is not a therapy group, we expect people to get a lot of therapeutic benefit and personal growth from participating, as well as developing professional skills in group leadership.
