What is Occupational Therapy!

Definition:
Occupational therapy (OT) is a branch of health care that helps people of all ages who have physical, sensory, or cognitive problems. OT can help them regain independence in all areas of their lives.

I think we are so much more that this.

Occupations for children and young people may include: areas of self-care (for example dressing , eating a meal, using the toilet); work or being productive (for example playing, attending school or university, volunteering, caring for others); and leisure (for example playing or socialising with friends, doing hobbies or sport).

We all have different sensory needs! As a parent of neurodiverse children, I feel it’s important for me to have a better understanding of the sense and the sensory system, even before o became an occupational therapist.

So why not book yourself on this understanding sensory processing.

Helps you better understand the senses and how we process information from our senses. Introduces you to what sensory issues can look like in a child’s behaviour and engagement, and give you some ideas on how to support your child’s sensory needs at home.

Debra Hughes is a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Occupational Therapist. Based in Warwickshire and provides private occupational therapy services to people living in Warwickshire and the Midlands. I have many years experience working in mental health, in various settings.

Assessment are usually carried out within your own home/school, with treatment delivered within your home and/or local community such as an educational provision.

What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?
Occupation' refers to any activity that is meaningful and / or essential to a person's everyday functioning. This could be getting washed and dressed, cooking a meal, going to work/school or taking part in a leisure activity.
An Occupational Therapist will assess a person's difficulties and abilities, and use functional treatment approaches to increase participation, safety and independence in their day to day life. They may also recommend specific aids, equipment and / or environmental adaptations to further improve their function.

Specialising in mental health, Autism
(ASD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette Syndrome and Adverse childhood experiences. Happy to offer later appointments as well as weekends to work around family commitments!

* Signposting to Arrange Autism specialist teaching assessments

* Support for private Autism and ADHD assessments! (Working in collaboration with MDT)
