Are emotions good or bad?
How many times have you felt something you just really didn’t want to feel, like anger, sadness, hurt, or disgust? The list goes on…
Just because emotions do not always provide a pleasurable experience, it does not make them good or bad. Emotions help us understand our own needs, motivate us to take action, and help us communicate and connect with others. But accepting them is never an easy thing.
Understanding what emotions do can be the first step to managing them.
Emotions are reactions we experience in response to our world and provide motivation to function within it. All too often we can get caught up in the ‘what I should be feeling’ story, or the ever-common ‘why do I feel this way’ question. Then, suddenly we are not even concerned with what got us to feel, but rather, what’s wrong with me for feeling like this and how can I get rid of it.
Emotions are not always ‘good’ to experience because sometimes we need to be motivated in other ways.
For example, sadness can show us what’s important to us, what we love, what we’ve lost, or what we are scared to lose. This can motivate us to appreciate what we have here and now. Similarly, guilt can give us an insight into our morals and values, who we are, who we want to be, and what’s important to us.
When we find the resilience to meet our negative emotions and realise they are there to help guide us to discover who we truly are, then we can live our most fulfilled lives and bring greater awareness and joy to ourselves and others.
