Using an egg donor and the emotions surrounding this leap

Many of us have a dream and an expectation that we will one day have a partner, children a family

We assume that when we are ready that all the pieces of the puzzle will come together to make this happen, but life is complex with many life options for women before starting a family. Physiology that lets us down or mis-timing of when we are ready to start a family. May mean we may not be able to get pregnant without help

Time is limited to have viable eggs to conceive. Born with us, they age with us, so by 40 years old percentages even with multiple IVF's is only 2 percent to have a full term pregnancy & baby. For some women fertility dives at 30. For most women at 35 our fertility is already unreliable

When pregnancy does not occur with the ease we had assumed the Grief, sadness and anger can overwhelm us with feeling of unfairness and loss

Choosing an egg donor is not as simple as buying a new car there must be a process of grieving our dream, the dream of how with thought our pregnancy would occur, what our baby would look like, letting go of our dream baby, to allow for the new possibility of using a Donor

Without this grieving the next step is a burden rather than a joy

Many of the women we work with are exhausted mentally, emotionally and physically as are their partners. After the disappointing news they cannot conceive or not without help, then multiple tries with IVF, the failures, the monthly wait for the period to start the IVF cycle, then the wait for the period to NOT come, in hopes of a pregnancy. Couples lives are on hold, some for years which is a huge stress on relationships and on the individuals. This needs to be addressed
Be sad, be all the feelings of both joy and grief that comes when thinking about using a donor

Do not deny that this is a complex issue

Talk to the person closest to you that can understand or see a counsellor

Once the emotions have been expressed the ambivalence will go and a new hope and the energy to go forward will emerge
