Great Southern OccuPlay What is Child-Centred Play Therapy? In play therapy, toys are like the child's words and play is the child's language.

Great Southern OccuPlay is a private Occupational Therapy practice providing child-centred play therapy and one on one person centered therapy whilst supporting families and communities in Kojonup and Katanning region. CCPT is a theoretically-based, age appropriate approach to child therapy that builds on the normal communication style of children. Specially trained therapists strategically use play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and feelings. Children often aren't developmentally ready to communicate their thoughts and feelings with words, particularly in relation to difficult situations. Children who have engaged with play therapy develop many skills:
- Become more responsible for behaviours and actions
- Develop new and creative solutions to problems
- Develop respect and acceptance of self and others
- Learn to experience and express emotions
- Learn new social skills and relational skills with family
- Develop empathy and respect for self and others

Trauma can also look like…

Repost from Synergetic Play Therapy Institute from Psych Monica Vogt.

Often what is labelled as “trauma” for a child isn’t even what is played out during therapy. This is why self-directed play is such a therapeutic and beneficial thing!

Repost from Pinky McKay

Fires, floods, war, pandemic… there’s a lot going on right now for us, & our communities to process.

Babies and toddlers might not be able to communicate well or at all with words, but they show their distress during disasters through behaviour. Here’s how parents can help them cope.

Both children and adults use play to process the complex! Free play is so important, when children (& adults) don’t have the words or language to help them process what is going on around them.

Throughout my 20 years in the field of early childhood development, in the classroom and as a kids’ show host, I have observed that a young child in ...

Play is the optimal engine of development - when our children freely play, the beautiful unfolding of childhood occurs naturally.

A common phrase used it the playroom is “that’s something you can do!”

Recognising & responding to a child’s effort & energy enhances the child’s sense of self-esteem and self concept o they can respond emotionally to future problems & situations in a more effective way. 💕 That moment of “I did it/I can do it” is so empowering

My kids LOVE Bluey! I must admit I haven’t ever really sat down and watched it… more overheard snippets as I work while the kids are distracted. I completely understand the authors feelings of envy of Bandit and Chilli’s “endless well of fun to draw on” I found this a very interesting article!

According to the article Child psychologist Cathy McMahon says the notion that we should be playing with our kids all the time is a relatively new one. Professor McMahon says "Realistically, parents can't be actively engaged with their children 100 per cent of the time and nor do they need to be."
🔹 During 20 minutes, try to be completely available (no phone, no alternative agenda); just sit down in the child's space (perhaps their bedroom) and let them lead.
🔹 Include kids in day-to-day chores.
🔹Encourage kids independence and exploration "Children need the space and confidence to go out, try things on their own, and sometimes fail.”
🔹Don't guilt-trip yourself about not always being available for your kids. "Parents need to be nurtured themselves if they are to provide for their children's needs without becoming exhausted," she says. "It's not easy, and parents need to be compassionate with themselves.
🔹No parent gets it right all of the time. "The notion of 'good-enough' parenting is helpful and liberating."

In the interest of family experimentation and likely award-winning journalism, I decided to spend an entire day trying to match Bandit's legendary dad energy by agreeing to do whatever my kids wanted, for as long as they wanted.

Our local child care Centre offers the most wonderful child-led service, & the philosophy is embodied in their programming & everything they do for the children in our community. 💜

Child-led is important and gives children a sense of agency!
So grateful to be a part of a service, whose team of educators our philosophy and program reflect the needs, interests and ideas of the children in a safe, secure and supportive setting!

Did you know we actually have 8 senses. Add in vestibular (balance), proprioception (where our body parts are in relation each other and the proximity of our body to the things around us) and interoception - our sense of the state of our internal body eg hunger, body temperature and noticing and recognising emotions. Some of us have over or under responsive senses which can impact our ability to regulate our emotions.
