“They whispered to her, “you cannot withstand the storm.” She whispered back, “I AM THE STORM.”

Believe in yourself. No self comparison. Walk in your own shoes and know that everything you have and need is already inside of you.

Before I crack open a brand new bullet journal for 2022… because I use many for different things, I wanted to try to do some watercolor painting on watercolor paper.

As my grandbaby and I painted together today, I listened to her keep saying “I messed up. It’s so ugly.” I thought about 2021 and looked at my own painting and how it wasn’t turning out how I wanted it either.

I heard the perfectionist sitting next to me repeating everythjng I used to say to myself and how I wouldn’t finish anything because it was never good enough.

And I had to tell her, “art isn’t about being perfect. Nothing has to be perfect. And so you keep doing your painting and make your mistakes beautiful. Because there is beauty in mistakes.”

And .. as I sat and looked at my own .. I knew I just couldn’t not do the same. And so I pushed through and made something beautiful that I love. And I’m doing that, know exactly how I’m going to use my brand new Your Refuge Journals bullet journal…. You’ll see.

I’m sharing this story as an example for you. You may think that creativity is silly or that it’s only about the paint, the markers, the washi tape, the glue, the stickers, the lettering etc. it’s deeper than that.

Finding your creative person inside of you teaches you … you can be or do anything your heart desires. But you just have to believe in yourself. And if you don’t … grab some paper, a pen, some crayons or colored pencils or even some paint. Start with an idea. And keep going. Keep making your mistakes beautiful. And when you finish … take all that .. Ans apply it to your life.

Be blessed

5 ESSENTIAL STEPS FOR JOURNALING YOUR GOALS IN 2022

I generally go against the grain and do the opposite of what everyone else does. But, there are times when it is important not to change things up, and this is one of those times.

We hear a LOT about SMART goals. a method for setting and achieving goals successfully created on 1981 by George T. Doran, a consultant and corporate planner for the Washington Power Company.

Over the past 17 years as a therapist, I have used this method of helping clients establish and achieve their goals using this method, and it works. It is simple, but most of all, it is replicable. This means you can use it as a guide over and over and over again. It truly keeps things simple.

There are 5 essential steps to follow:
✅ Specific
✅ Measurable
✅ Achievable
✅ Relevant
✅ Timeframe

I encourage you to take time to reflect on each step thoroughly, and to write them down in your journal

If you would like to dive deeper click the link in my bio and join our FREE mental health and journaling support group. We will be focusing on goals and habits the entire month of January.

If group work is not your thing, feel free to reach out to me and we can talk more about it on an individual basis. I WANT TO SEE YOU WIN!! Lets start the year of setting you up for your success, whatever that looks like and means for YOU.

In the meantime, COMMENT 1 thing you would like to accomplish BEFORE 2022.

Do what you love and you will never run out of ideas.

This is so random….

As I was sitting here thinking about setting up my journal for October, sorting through all the pretty papers, all of the colors I could choose from, and just kind of sat back and was like, “I just love doing this so much.”

So often I see the question, “I want to start journaling but I’m not creative” or “I’m not an artist.” And it kind of makes me really sad.

We’re all artists. Think about Pablo Picasso. He’s one of the most famous painters in history. But I bet he’s not able to play beautiful piano concertos like Beethoven, or wrote amazing children’s books like Dr. Seuss.

But they are all artists …..

Make your journal what you want it to be. Use it for what you want. Make it whatever you want. There isn’t a right way or a wrong way. You’ll never know where you’ll end up once you start, but you’ll always know where you’ll stay if yo do nothing.

Crazy thing is…. Most ideas we think of on our own… someone else has already thought of it. How we color it, paint it, sing it, cut it, paste it…. Is what truly makes it special.

Wanna know a secret? I really don’t do “themes” in my journals. I just do whatever because I like my freedom and at any given moment could change my mind and want it to look like something else.

Wherever you’re at in life, at some point you did everythjng you wanted and were happy doing it. If you’re not doing it now … you can always start doing it again. There’s no rule that says you can’t.

So please… do what you love. And don’t compare your Picasso with Beethoven’s symphonies. They aren’t the same …. But they are still so beautiful.

Like I said this was such a random post but I dunno …. Maybe someone else could use my thoughts today.

I’m just wondering … what is something you truly love to do ?

Share your answer in the COMMENTS.

Pass this along to someone who might need to hear this today . And have a blessed day ❤️.

WE WEREN’T MEANT TO FLY ALONE

It a basic human need for us as humans to be connected and have a sense of belonging with others. Human connection is necessary for us in our lives to healthy.

Did you know that in order for us to reach self actualization, which is the absolute highest parts of ourselves that very few actually reach, we must meet our needs in EVERY aspect of :

1) Basic needs - water, food, sleep, air etc
2) Safety - employment, health, resources
3) Love and belonging - Friendship, intimacy, family, feeling of connection
4) Esteem- self respect, self worth, mutual respect, balance
5) Self actualization - acceptance of facts, morality, lack of prejudice, problem solving, creativity

We always hear about us not “relying on others for our happiness.” In some ways that is true, but in other ways it couldn’t be further from the truth.

We cannot move forward WITHOUT our belonging needs being met. If we aren’t connected in ways that also meet our safety needs (ie healthy relationships), we’re not going to thrive.

Community isn’t just about serving others. It’s about ALSO meeting our needs for being connected.

In 2019, I lost an entire community I had built from the ground up. A community where I was respected, was serving at a very high degree, and when I lost my job, I never looked back.

But, the lights shut off. It wasn’t because I was insecure or lacked sense of purpose or self worth. It was because I lost my sense of belonging. It was tragic and traumatic. It was a HUGE loss in my life.

I’m sharing my story because I want you to know there is hope. I know what it’s like to suffer in silence, to isolate yourself, and to feel as if you’re in complete darkness.

We weren’t meant to do life alone - I do t care WHO tells you otherwise. It’s not even psychologically sound.

If you’re seeking support for your mental health, please join me in building our mental health community.

“WHAT IS MY PURPOSE?”

Purpose was on my mind today. When I doodle, I really don’t think about a lot until I start adding colors.

I always start with some yucky lines that look rough and somewhat make sense. But when I start adding colors, the picture comes alive.

As the picture comes alive, I just keep going until I feel complete. Being creative ….. completes me.

It relieves stress and tension, keeps me focused, generates plans and ideas, and makes me feel happy. It’s kind of just this meditative thing I like to do.

This is kind of like our lives. Things get messy and don’t always make sense. But when we take the time to write it down, and have that visual seeing it on paper, our thoughts and emotions stir up, adding color and bringing everything to life.

It is in that moment we learn about ourselves, solve our problems, and turn messy into something beautiful.

It requires patience, self compassion, faith, acceptance, hope, love, and just knowing you are ENOUGH, and knowing you don’t have be anyone else but you, to know that everything you were meant to be ….. already lies within you.

It’s all the color in your messy lines.

WHAT DOES FREEDOM MEAN TO YOU?

Freedom has been on my mind.

Freedom for me means not being a prisoner in my own mind. It means enjoying life on my own terms. It means living a life of balance. It means having time, laughing, just being me and that being me is enough.

It means laughing when I make mistakes, not dwelling on things I can’t change, not trying to control things I have no control over, longer days because each moment is something great.

But most of all, being loved by my very best friend and my everything … Jesus Christ. Because He’s the one … who has given me all these things.

He is my refuge. When I need to cry and be heard - he hears me. When I am lostHe shows me the way. When I am angry, He forgives me. When I make mistakes He says, “it’s okay. I see you as perfect.” When I want to laugh at His jokes, He just watched me laugh and smiles. When I am afraid,He gives me comfort. When I’m in a dark place, He turns on the lights. When I don’t like myself much,He encourages me and lifts me up and tells me He’s proud.

For me there’s no other freedom I can think of that is greater than the freedom His name provides.

We all have different ideas about freedom .. so I was just wondering what does freedom mean to you?

Leave a comment… I’d love to hear.

SOMEONE WHO IS SUICIDAL NEEDS SOMEONE TO BE THERE

According to Thomas Joiner's Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Su***de, one of the primary factors for someone who is suicidal is a low sense of belonging, and he highlights the importance of connectedness.

I recall many visits to the emergency room in the middle of the night as a mobile crisis worker, interviewing men, women, and children who had reported wanting to kill themselves, or ones that already attempted.

I also recall many conversations with clients who felt so hopeless, felt like they were a burden, and saw no reason to live. But, there was one constant - they needed to feel they belonged, and needed to feel connected, and needed to feel wanted. They needed just a ray of hope for their lives.

Often times people shy away from these conversations because they don't know what to do or what to say. Here is how you can be there:

1) Follow through with any support you say you will offer
2) Do not make commitments you are unable or unwilling to accomplish
3) Talk out ways with them that they can receive the supports they need
4) Listen. Listen and find out who or what may be the best sources of help for them.

If you or someone you know is contemplating su***de, !toBeThere. It could be life saving.

In addition, if you or someone else you know is struggling and needs help, there is help waiting at the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline @ 1-800-273-TALK (8527).

"ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT SUCIDE?"

It remember the first time I had to ask that question. I was squeamish, just like you. Like you, I believed that by asking that question directly would make someone go do it, or I didn't know what to do if they said "yes."

However, according to the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline, studies show it can decrease the risk, not increase it. In fact, being direct is best.

Asking the question “Are you thinking about su***de?” communicates that you’re open to speaking about su***de in a non-judgmental and supportive way. Asking in this direct, unbiased manner, can open the door for effective dialogue about their emotional pain and can allow everyone be the one to ask involved to see what next steps need to be taken. Other questions you can ask include,
“How do you hurt?” and
“How can I help?”

Do not ever promise to keep their thoughts of su***de a secret.

The flip side of the “Ask” step is to “Listen.” Make sure you take their answers seriously and not to ignore them, especially if they indicate they are experiencing thoughts of su***de.

This information was taken directly from .com, the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline's website for their Su***de Prevention Awareness campaign, for the entire month of September.

To learn more about why asking someone the hard question can save a life, please visit the link in my bio.

Please SHARE because the more people this message reaches, the more people it can help.

If you or someone you know is struggling and in need of help, call the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-TALK.

Our Story

The story of Trinity's Hope, LLC really began when my grandbaby Trinity was about 3 years old. She and my daughter were going through a very difficult time in their lives that broke all of our hearts. I really did not know what to do. But something spoke to me and said, "Nancy, you may not be able to keep her safe but you know someone who can."

It was then that I took her to church. There were times I did not want to go but she loved it so much and I could not break her heart. I just couldn't. So she and I went every single Sunday and it was during that time that she and I developed a very close bond. Not only did we create a bond, but I reestablished my relationship with God.

In my work life, working with the op**te population during a time when the opioid epidemic had hit really hard, I devoted all of my time and efforts helping those who could not help themselves. I made it my mission to never let anyone leave my office without hope. And that is exactly what I did.

Over the course of about 3 years, I wrote and/or assisted writing grants that resulted in approximately $500,000 of funding for a small rural county in which I was working. That money was used to improve the quality of care for individuals in need of services or medication to treat their opioid addiction.
