What are the differences between blood, saliva, and urine testing for hormones? 🤷

When it comes to understanding your hormonal balance, there are several different testing methods.

The 3 most common testing methods are: blood, saliva, and urine analysis. Here are some of the highlights for each method:

🩸 Blood Testing:
▪️ Most common method for hormone testing.
▪️ It measures hormone levels in the bloodstream, providing a single snapshot of hormone levels
▪️ Hormones best tested through blood include: Thyroid, Insulin, and some reproductive hormones
▪️ They are generally reliable for assessing levels and can detect both free and bound hormones
▪️ Useful for diagnosing certain hormone-related conditions.
▪️ They do not provide a comprehensive view of hormone health
💦 Saliva Testing:
▪️Measures the unbound, biologically active fraction of hormones
▪️ It involves collecting saliva samples at specific times of the day
▪️ Useful for measuring: Cortisol, Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, & DHEA
▪️ Often used to evaluate adrenal function, hormone imbalances, and circadian rhythm
▪️ Less invasive than blood testing and can be done at home
🧪 Urine Testing:
▪️ Measures hormone metabolites (breakdown products of hormones)
▪️ Evaluates both free & metabolized hormones
▪️ Assesses hormones such as Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, Cortisol, and their metabolites
▪️ Useful for assessing Estrogen metabolism and determining the ratio between beneficial & potentially harmful estrogen metabolites
▪️ Urine testing can also provide information about hormone clearance rates and the effectiveness of hormone detoxification pathways
▪️ Non-invasive and can be done at home
📌 How do you know which method is best for YOU?
Work with someone who is able to customize the testing to your specific needs. Discussing your concerns will help to guide which method of testing is best for you individual situation.

8 common symptoms of hormonal imbalances in women: ⤵
🚩 Irregular periods - Missed or delayed periods, heavy or prolonged bleeding, and spotting.
▪️ Hormonal imbalances disrupt the production and regulation of Estrogen, Progesterone, and other hormones.
🚩 Mood swings - Including irritability, anxiety, depression, and mood swings.
▪️ Certain hormones regulate your feel-good neurotransmitters like Serotonin and Dopamine affecting mood.
🚩 Fatigue - Hormonal imbalances can cause fatigue and low energy levels.
▪️ Thyroid hormone and Cortisol are just 2 hormones that regulate metabolism and energy levels.
🚩 Weight gain - Especially around the stomach - think muffin top.
▪️ Insulin, cortisol, and Estrogen regulate metabolism and fat storage. Hormonal changes impact how the body processes and stores fat.
🚩 Acne - Especially around the chin and jawline.
▪️ Hormones like Androgens (e.g., testosterone) can stimulate oil production and skin cell growth, leading to clogged pores and acne.
🚩 Hair loss - Hair loss or thinning can be caused by Thyroid, Estrogen and Insulin imbalances.
▪️ Thyroid hormone and Estrogen regulate hair growth and maintenance. Hormonal changes impact hair growth, leading to hair loss or thinning.
🚩 Insomnia - Hormonal imbalances can interrupt your sleep cycle and cause insomnia.
▪️ Hormones like Cortisol and Melatonin play a role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle. Changes in hormone levels can affect the quality of your sleep.
🚩 Hot flashes - Any sudden feelings of warmth and sweating with no other explanation.
▪️ Hot flashes relate to changes in Estrogen levels affecting the hypothalamus, which regulates body temperature. They can also happen if there is Insulin dysregulation.

🧠 Making lasting changes requires shifting the way you think about things.

There are two ways of looking at the same situation.

If you are trying to make changes you can view it as:
❎ this is impossible, why am I the only one that has to this, it's not fair that I can't have ....
➕ I know what I need to do to improve my health, I am choosing to do things to heal my body

Mindset is the thing that will move you forward or hold you back.

Anxiety can have many different root causes both emotional and physical.

🤔 But how do you know which one is causing YOUR anxiety?

The answer isn't always simple and it is usually a combination of several different things.

When I work with clients, I do a thorough history and intake to get a better understanding of what the cause might be.

Then, if needed, we dig in and do some testing to get a more accurate picture before creating a plan.

Do you find yourself feeling
😒 moody?
🤨distracted?
🤔unable to think clearly?

Brain fog is a common symptom.
👉 but just because it's common, doesn't mean its normal.
It is usually a sign of a bigger issue.

Addressing root causes such as hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, leaky gut and inflammation are key.

Assessing the health of the microbiome through a stool test is the first place I look.

Correcting these imbalances can help to eliminate brain fog.
