Why is Lp(a) so under-measured despite being a significant independent risk factor for ASCVD events?

Learn more here:

Despite being a significant ASCVD risk factor, Lp(a) is not commonly measured in the United States. We explore the reasons behind the limited measurement of Lp(a), provide statistics on its prevalence and screening, and discuss additional screening recommendations for individuals with high Lp(a) lev

Did You Know: Not all of us are alike? (shocking, right!?)

Ethnicity plays a big part in accurately measuring risk for ASCVD events.

For example:
- African Americans have higher incidence of high Lp(a).
- South Asian ancestry is a risk factor for heart attacks.

There are many factors that play into individual risk. Our Cardiometabolic Risk Assessment considers over 40 individual factors, including ethnicity and others.

Modifying individual cardiometabolic risk starts with early, precision identification. How do you know what risk is present and should be addressed without first measuring? Let us help you find the clearest picture for an individual then guide you toward reducing that risk.

The presence of arterial plaque is an extremely important risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.💖

Learn more about one of the most common screening techniques, CAC screening, and check out our directory of 200+ screening locations across the U.S.

Learn more about the process, benefits, and limitations of Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) screening to detect the presence and extent of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that supply the heart with oxygen-rich blood.

Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Bill Cromwell, recently gave a fantastic talk at the first ever Collaborative Science Conference about all cause mortality and a newer multi-marker called Metabolic Vulnerability Index (MVX).

It's about 45 minutes, but we promise that you'll be on the edge of your seats.

Dr. William Cromwell discusses the complex interaction of metabolic and inflammatory factors in determining mortality risks, beyond traditional cardiovascula...

Happy Eclipse Day! What percentage of sun-blockage are you getting today? How long are you in the totality?

Speaking of blockage (😉), did you know that arterial plaque that blocks your arteries is driven by a common soup of insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, and high atherogenic particles (ApoB)?

February is Heart Health Month. One of the most frequent "next steps" recommendations our Cardiometabolic Risk Assessments made is a recommendation for noninvasive imaging to identify arterial plaque (hopefully very early).

If you are over the age of 45 and have not yet had a Coronary Artery Calcium scan (CAC) or other imaging study done, this may be a good moth to drop about $100 at your local hospital to get your arteries checked.

This snip about the different kind of imaging is from a longer conversation between Dr. Cromwell and Brett Scher on the Metabolic Mind Podcast.

What is Lipoprotein(a) and Why Does it Matter?

Did you know that Lipoprotein(a) is different than other lipoproteins and an independent risk factor heart attack?

High levels of Lp(a) can significantly increase your risk of heart disease, even if other factors seem normal.

Lp(a) values are categorized in 3 ranges:
- Normal level: < 75 nmol/L
- Elevated level: 75-125 nmol/L
- Very High level: > 125 nmol/L
- Extremely High level: > 430 nmol/L

If you already have arterial plaque identified through a CAC score, CTA, CIMT or other means and you Lp(a) is high, your risk of an ASCVD event is significantly higher than your already elevated risk.

Knowing if your Lp(a) is high helps guide your management of your other ASCVD risk factors.

Are you one of the ~20% with high Lp(a)?

We want to make Lp(a) measurement as accessible as possible. If you cannot get yours tested through your physician, you can order directly from us for just $24.
