One thing I appreciate about my culture and how I grew up is that all of my parents’ good friends were my “aunts” and “uncles”. We’re passing that on to our boys. I love how “Uncle” Spencer made it into T’s 1st grade school diary!

Posted • "My father is from 제주도 (Jejudo) and my mother from 전주 (Junju.) They met when my father became a patient at the hospital where my mother was a nurse. My father’s Kim clan is 광산 김씨 (Gwangsan Kim), typically known for their many national scholars during the Joseon Dynasty. My father wasn’t afforded that level of education in rural Jeju, so he packed up and started his lifelong mission to support his entire family, current and future, as a teenager in Seoul. Eventually making it over to NYC with less than $100 in the mid-1970s, he worked and burdened and worked and burdened for decades to give his children an opportunity to fly. My mother, supporting him and our family in the strongest of ways, infinitely more than her small 5-foot frame could ever shoulder. (She argues 5’1”.) Her model of care and her many sacrifices grounding our family while fueling my flight as a hard-working, independent, and compassionate human - just like her. And to my father’s great (and secret) pride, that 광산 김씨 scholar hustle lived on - I became a university professor. Together, through ups and downs and insides and outs, my parents gave us every opportunity we could ever dream of and the foundation of a culture rich in familial devotion, non-egocentrism, and honor to others."

"What's your specialty?" That's the one question I have been asked consistently since immigrating to Academia. It's really an unexpected question unless you're from the land of Academia.
