Ways to end mental health stigma🗣️
Stigma is defined as a set of negative and often unfair beliefs that a society or group of people have about something. Specifically related to mental health, stigma is the negative/discriminatory attitudes people have about mental illness and mental health problems.
Some of the harmful effects of mental health stigma include:
• reluctance to seek help/treatment
• lack of understanding by family, friends, etc.
• fewer opportunities for work, school, or other social activities
• trouble finding housing and access to other resources
• physical violence and harassment
Everyone can help reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health & here’s how!

How depression differs in men… It is important to raise awareness to the ways depression differs in men. Men are less likely to seek help but more likely to commit su***de. These symptoms are not the common symptoms present in depression but they are for men. It’s important for us to be aware of these symptoms so we can recognize when someone or even yourself, as a man, may need help.

Aaron Beck’s depressive cognitive triad (1967) is a cognitive theory behind depression. This cognitive triad functions as the core belief system present in individuals who deal with depression. Depressed individuals have these automatic and uncontrollable negative thoughts about
• the self (“I am worthless”)
• the world (“no one cares about me”)
• the future (“this will never change or get better”)
This belief system not only causes depression but maintains it, by interfering with normal cognitive processing like logically and rationally interpreting events, impairing perception/judgment, memory, & contributing to many different cognitive distortions.
How can we work to challenge these automatic negative thoughts?

An introduction of myself. 🤍
My name is Keisha Johnson (she/her). I am 23 years old. I have my bachelors in psychology and currently applying for my doctorate (wish me luck!🤞🏽lol) I work at two different psychiatric hospitals, one as a mental health technician and the other as a program coordinator! My dream career is to be a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating mood and anxiety disorders and to also have my own practice one day. Since a teenager, I have struggled with mental health issues and still do to this day. Depression and anxiety has been something that has always been apart of my life but it wasn’t until I was 17 years old when I first learned about it and what it was. I knew what I felt inside but never had a word for it. That day I knew I wanted to have a career in mental health. I knew I wanted to help others who felt the way I did. I knew I wanted to spread knowledge to those who also knew what they felt inside but couldn’t put a word to it. Mental health has really become my passion and I am so glad that I get to do what I love everyday and to help others who are also struggling with their mental health. As far as Ms. Psych, I chose to create this platform to spread knowledge and raise awareness about mental health and hoping to possibly help/reach anyone who may need it.

This month is national su***de prevention month.
Su***de is the 10th LEADING cause of death and it is 100% preventable.
It is up to us to work to prevent it. So what can we do?
We can educate ourselves, check in on our loved ones we know may be at risk, create and make COMFORTABLE space for su***de and suicidal feelings to be talked about, and share resources when we can.
We can all help prevent su***de and help save someone’s life.

•talk with a therapist
•continue medication if already prescribed
•confide in a supportive family member or friend
•spend time outdoors when the sun is out
•open your blinds when waking up in the morning to bring in natural sunlight
•do NOT isolate! spend time with the people who love and care about you
•practice mindfulness
•practice positive thinking and share gratitude
•get enough sleep and try to have a balanced diet!! *very important*
•engage in a lot of self-care
•find/do hobbies and activities that you enjoy!
stay strong, you can beat this 🤍

Reminder to spread love and kindness today. 💛

19/11/2021

I’m so excited to share with you guys my first topic video! this video I decided to discuss seasonal depression considering the fact that it’s hitting a lot of us right now, including myself. but there are many ways we can cope with the upcoming winter season. Since this was my first video and I was so nervous talking and recording (sorry for all the “uhms” 🤣) there was some information that I forgot that I want to include. Other ways you can cope with seasonal depression is to GET SUNLIGHT WHEN YOU CAN! And try NOT TO ISOLATE! Be around ones that love and care about you whenever you can! I also want to mention how the holidays may impact seasonal depression. Even though the holidays are a happy time for most people, for some they can be hard. So this is a reminder to be kind to others, because you never know what they next person may be going through. I know the winter months can be hard to get through but let this video be a reminder that you are not alone and you CAN get through them.
Thank you guys for tuning in. 🤍
