As someone with a combined clinical (RMN - mental health nursing specialising in health promotion, prevention and early intervention) and holistic health (Reflexology, Massage & Gabrielle Roth 5 Rhythms) background, and also lived experience recovering from C-ptsd, I have always felt drawn to working in a trauma informed, strengths based, solution focused way, and to embodiment practices that util

ise the wisdom of the body. TRE works with our neurophysiology and brain plasticity, and is a gentle healing tool that supports the evolving recovery process. What to expect from a TRE session:

TRE is a body based self regulation tool. A simple set of preparation exercises are used to activate therapeutic neurogenic tremors in the body. The tremors help to reset the reflexes and habits in the central nervous system. In stress, tension and trauma, old primitive reflex parts of the brain may get stuck in defensive strategies. Over-protective reflexes contract our bodies for ‘flight or fight’ or shutdown the body in ‘freeze’. TRE is a safe, gentle and respectful way of releasing held tension and waking up and truly ‘meeting’ your body.

Pain and other physical problems are often seen as separate from stress and overwhelm, relationship issues and existential angst.

I like to talk about bodywork as gardening; we are planting seeds, creating the conditions for change and waiting for growth.

In my initial conversations, I recommend doing a review at 3 to 6 sessions and again at 6 to 12 sessions. Sometimes I say it is going to be a long haul, resources are so low that it will take months for health to shine through.

An experienced therapist offers confidence in supporting someone through the peaks and troughs of a therapeutic relationship, often based on their own experience of receiving treatments.

We’re exploring this idea and more in our new ‘Art of Touch’ 2-year biodynamic craniosacral therapy training.

We have two great groups starting the journey this year, and I’m enjoying the teaching. If you’d like to join us next time, you can find out more here… www.bodycollege.net/london - or click the link in my bio

Did you know that the brain processes trauma differently than everyday memories? Traumatic experiences activate the reptilian brain, the oldest part of the brain that controls instinctive behaviors like fight or flight. This overwhelms the rational, thinking brain so we can survive immediate danger.
But sometimes trauma gets "stuck" in the reptilian brain, continuing to trigger panic and fear responses even when real danger has passed. Breathwork can help! By consciously slowing down our breath and breathing deeply into the belly, we send signals to the reptilian brain that we're safe. This calms the instinctive reactions so the rational brain can catch up and begin to make sense of the traumatic memories.

Trauma recovery is a journey, but mindful breathing gives the thinking brain space to do its healing work. With time and practice, breathwork can help integrate traumatic memories so they cause less panic and more peace.

“When we do not have the time or support to complete the natural stress cycle, the leftover survival energy is stored in our body and nervous system where it can disrupt our physical or mental wellbeing”.

Whether TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) or whichever somatic modality floats your boat, we HAVE to come to the body to release, connect, integrate and heal.

Trust the wisdom of your body to do what it knows it needs to do to reset and rebalance your nervous system. Your only job is to create the time and safe space to support this process…

TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) actively works with improving ‘Vagal Tone’.

And as Storm Insight’s post states, increasing your vagal tone is an ESSENTIAL component of any healing journey.

For more robust information about the wonders and beauty that is all things Vagus Nerve, I can hIghly recommend Stephen Porges’ book, ‘The Polyvagal Theory’. 💚

“Find meaning…”

Ooooooo, this landed…🥰

Find meaning. Distinguish melancholy from sadness. Go out for a walk. It doesn’t have to be a romantic walk in the park, spring at its most spectacular moment, flowers and smells and outstanding poetical imagery smoothly transferring you into another world. It doesn’t have to be a walk during which you’ll have multiple life epiphanies and discover meanings no other brain ever managed to encounter. Do not be afraid of spending quality time by yourself. Find meaning or don’t find meaning but 'steal' some time and give it freely and exclusively to your own self. Opt for privacy and solitude. That doesn’t make you antisocial or cause you to reject the rest of the world. But you need to breathe. And you need to be. ~Albert Camus

Good morning everyone…🌞

I’d like to introduce you all to the ‘Prisoners of Pain’ by Arthur Janov. It’s an oldie, first published in 1980, but it’s a classic of its genre in the trauma recovery field. Even the cover resonates deeply in my body and psyche.

I first came to it at the age of 25 (I’m soon to be 60…how did THAT happen so quickly?!! 😂), and it was the first ‘Guide’ that alerted me to the fact that I had unprocessed, unintegrated trauma still living on and wreaking havoc in my body and psyche. It profoundly transformed my then relationship to Self, and set me off on a healing recovery journey that continues to this day.

Janov died in 2017, and although his ‘Primal Scream’ therapy was considered a little on the controversial side, his books led the way for a whole generation of wounded souls.

Gratitude to ALL of the teachers that shine a light in the darkness of this troubled world. 🙏

This film looks promising. 👍

Coercive emotional/psychological control is such an insidious form of abuse. 🫤 Hopefully this film shall help to raise awareness about this ‘behind closed doors’ manky toxic behaviour.

Definitively added to my ‘to do’ list! 🤓📽

Some further words of wisdom, and potential training opportunities (main post), from Steve Haines, my TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) Training Provider…

We can use three statements to help understand working with and overcoming trauma;

1. 'There is trauma' - terrible things happen to human beings.

2. 'We can overcome trauma' - we are wired to survive. We would not be here as a human species unless we had evolved ways of recovering from that lion attack (or sudden loss of a loved one, or being abused, or being in an accident...).

3. 'Healing trauma is about meeting the body' - in trauma, old parts of the brain change how the body works. By paying attention to feelings in the body and learning to self-regulate we can reboot the brain.

The central message from trauma research is that humans are very resilient. We can, and frequently do, emerge stronger and wiser after being overwhelmed.
