“I am wise even from within the womb of my mother. I am the woman of the winds, of the water, of the paths, because I am known in heaven, because I am a doctor woman.”
– María Sabina Magdalena García

María Sabina was a Mazatec sabia (“one who knows”) or curandera (medicine woman), who lived in Huautla de Jiménez, a town in the Sierra Mazateca area of the Mexican state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. She spent her entire life in that small village up in the mountains and worked the land in order to pay for (perhaps paradoxically) beer and ci******es.

She did not know how to read or write. Her verses were either spoken or sung. She expressed herself through the voice of “the sacred mushroom”, in a language that could be neither taught nor acquired. Her chants were first translated from her native Mazatec into English, and later into Spanish. Her healing sacred mushroom ceremonies, called veladas, were based on the use of psilocybin mushrooms, such as Psilocybe cyanescens. They are known for introducing the western world to entheogenic mushrooms.

María Sabina is regarded as a sacred figure in Huautla and considered one of Mexico’s greatest poets. She did not take credit for her poetry; the mushrooms spoke through her:

“Cure yourself with the light of the sun and the rays of the moon.
With the sound of the river and the waterfall.
With the swaying of the sea and the fluttering of birds.

Heal yourself with mint, with neem and eucalyptus.

Sweeten yourself with lavender, rosemary, and chamomile.

Hug yourself with the cocoa bean and a touch of cinnamon.

Put love in tea instead of sugar, and take it looking at the stars.

Heal yourself with the kisses that the wind gives you and the hugs of the rain.

Get strong with bare feet on the ground and with everything that is born from it.

Get smarter every day by listening to your intuition, looking at the world with the eye of your forehead.

Jump, dance, sing, so that you live happier.

Heal yourself, with beautiful love, and always remember: you are the medicine.”

“A very important member of Swazi society is the "sangoma" or diviner whose role it is to find the cause of misfortune or disease, prescribe actions to rectify it and prepare medicine to cure illness. Although often misunderstood by Europeans and given the epithet "witchdoctor", they would more accurately be described as "witchfinder".

Sangoma or diviner usually starts out as a normal person who, through dreams or visions that are interpreted by another sangoma as indicating that his or, more frequently, her (in Swaziland there are far more women tangoma than men) ancestral spirits are calling him or her to become a diviner. Although the "calling" is often resisted at first, because a sangoma is distinguished by her appearance with her hair in "siyendle" style, decorated with small bottles of traditional medicine and subject to many taboos, it gradually becomes irresistible and she becomes a learner sangoma in the household of a senior sangoma.”

Western people believe that a shaman is something like a “medicine man”, "holy priest" or “magic doctor”. But in Mongolia and Siberia the shamans are not simple doctors (folk doctors), they are very spiritual people. There exist many different kinds of healers in this homeland, and they are masters in their field. There are otoshi (healers), barishi (bone-setters), and bariyachi (midwives). All of these specialists are believed to have some sort of help from the world of spirits.

It is the shaman, however, that is the true master of knowing really well the spirit world. The shaman is chosen by the spirits at his birth, and it is then that an extra soul called utha enters this person. This soul helps shamans to gather the help of other spirits. Without this protection, rituals and other spirits, the world journeys are dangerous. The main function of the shaman is to restore and maintain balance in his community. Shamans conduct blessings, rituals of protection, hunting magic, rain making and divination. They also cure sicknesses that have spiritual causes. Shamans are also the caretakers of traditional culture. With their knowledge of ancient tradition, their counsel has been sought throughout the ages.

As I embark on this journey to educate myself about plant medicine, I’m starting to question how much can I even read online if scientists and researchers have only started to scratch the surface of what’s known about the health benefits of psychedelics? Do I need to know the Western name for yet another newly discovered psychoactive plant/funghi(in order to know that they exist and have medicinal benefits on a quantum level…hell nah. I don’t need a doctor or a laboratory to assign validity and credibility to Mother Earth…but if you do, that’s okay, that’s why this company exists, to bridge the gap between the Western and Non-Western worlds.

All things considered, here’s what I found in the Western world…

I struggle internally when assigning legitimacy and credibility to Western sources. I feel this more than I would to admit. Do I need to know the Western name for yet undiscovered species of psychoactive plants and funghi(in order to know that they exist and have medicinal benefits on a quantum level…hell nah. I will never need a doctor or a laboratory to assign validity to Mother Earth…if you do, that’s okay, that’s why this company exists, to bridge the gap between the Western and Non-Western worlds. All things considered I wanted to cover my bases, so I did a little digging and here’s what I found in the Western world…
