When you're already moving, when there's no time to meditate, no quiet in the house, no space to breathe, you need a mental circuit breaker that works in real time. ๐Ÿ›‘

This is the

Acknowledge the effort:
Instead of "I should be doing more," try: "My body is functioning and I am doing a hard thing."
No toxic positivity. Just the neutral truth.

2๏ธโƒฃ Check the tank:
Ask: "What is one physical need I can meet in the next 60 seconds?"
A glass of water. One deep breath. Sitting down.

This works because it interrupts the "I'm not enough" loop by redirecting your brain to something concrete and immediate.

Share this with your teen. Practice it together. The families who regulate together build something that lasts. ๐Ÿ’™

Stop the spiral. ๐Ÿ›‘

When the house feels like a pressure cooker, try the 60-second circuit breaker.

Between academic pressure and the "May Crazies," itโ€™s easy for everyoneโ€™s nervous system to get hijacked. Before the tension peaks, use the

This isn't just "relaxing," it's a DBT grounding technique that forces the brain to move from the reacting mind to the observing mind.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Reset:

Set a timer for 1 minute and notice:

5 things you see (just observe, don't judge).

4 things you feel (the chair, the air, your feet on the floor).

3 things you hear (distant traffic, a clock ticking).

2 things you smell (or imagine a favorite scent).

1 thing you taste.

Grounding the nervous system in the present moment interrupts the spiral. Practice this in the car, before dinner, or right before a big test.

April in The Woodlands is a sprint.

Between STAAR testing, spring sports, and the I-45 shuffle, your familyโ€™s nervous system is likely on high alert.
But spring is the perfect time to disrupt old patterns and build rhythms that actually protect your peace.

Save this list and try just ONE shift this week:

โ†’ The Device-Free Dinner: Just one night. No notifications.
โ†’ The Transition Walk: 10 mins together before homework starts.
โ†’ The High/Low Check-in: A simple way to hear what isnโ€™t being said.
โ†’ The Sleep Buffer: 15 mins earlier to prep for the summer shift.
โ†’ The Fun Win: No performance, no pressure. Just play.

Small shifts. Compounding impact. ๐Ÿ’™

P.S. Need more than just a new rhythm? Weโ€™ve expanded:
โœจ 5 FREE SLOTS: Pro-bono therapy openings with our Intern, Melissa.
โœจ EVENING/WEEKENDS: Immediate spots for Sigma/ATNA clients.

Tool of the Week:
The DBT Cope Ahead Skill: Preparing for the Hard Moments Before They Arrive

One of the most powerful tools in DBT's toolkit for performance anxiety is the Cope Ahead skill โ€” a structured mental rehearsal practice that prepares the brain and body for stressful situations before they happen.

Here's how:
1: Identify the situation
Name the specific stressful event. "I have a final exam in AP Chemistry on Friday."

2: Identify the emotions
What emotions are likely to come up? "I'll probably feel anxious, maybe panicky. My mind might go blank."

3: Decide which skills to use
Which coping skills will help in that moment? "I'll use paced breathing before I go in. I'll remind myself I've prepared. If I blank, I'll move on to the next question and come back."

4: Rehearse it in vivid detail
Close your eyes and walk through the scenario โ€” including the hard moments โ€” while practicing the coping skills. See yourself handling it. Not perfectly. Just effectively.

5: Relax afterward
End with a few slow breaths and return to the present moment.

Rehearsing the hard moment, and coping with it successfully, builds genuine confidence and reduces fear when the real moment arrives.

The home stretch of the school year is one of the most stressful times for teens โ€” and it doesn't always look like stress. ๐Ÿ’™

Watch for:
โ†’ Procrastinating more than usual on assignments
โ†’ Headaches or stomachaches before school
โ†’ Talking about feeling "stupid" or "behind"
โ†’ Avoiding talking about school entirely
โ†’ Emotional outbursts that seem connected to performance pressure
โ†’ Losing motivation for things they used to care about

Test anxiety, senioritis, and end-of-year pressure are real โ€” and they're peaking right now.

What looks like not caring is often overwhelm. Knowing the difference is everything.

Save this and share it with a parent who needs to see it.
