Catharmus tinctoris (dried flower form call Carthami Flos) 红花 otherwise known as Safflower

Hi all, I’ve been reading something about herbs and I found this plant, Catharmi Flos intriguing. I’m dying to share a summary of what I’ve read with everyone who’s interested.

The tile of the research:
Carthami flos: a review of its ethnopharmacology, pharmacology and clinical applications
Authors: Yanhua Tu, Yingru Xue, Dandan Guo, Lianna Sun, Meili Guo

The original article is available at:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0102695X15001015

Nature of the article:
It is a Review of multiple studies that mention and summarize researches done by other scientists and make a summary from there.

This plant has been used for over 2000 years in China to treat a wide array of illnesses including
Protective effects on brain tissue, osteoblasts, heart cells (in those with myocardial ischemia ie: heart attack)

The Carthami Flos extract is also known to have a bunch of “anti” effects such as:
Anti-inflammatory
Antithrombotic
Antitumor
Antidiabetic
Gynecological health:inducing me**es

Myth busting:
Carthami flos is natural and does not have any side effects?
It does have some side effects though, including but not limited to allergic reaction, s***matogenetic failure (s***m damaging effects), fatty liver, nephrotoxicity (kidney damaging effects), induces abortion and stillbirth.

Who was the genius that started noticing the effects of this plant?
The effects were documented (we’re not sure if this is the first person but his findings was documented) by
Zhang Qian in the historic “Silk Road”
Zhang Zhongjin in the book called Medical Treasures of the Golden Chambers

If you’re interested to read more about Carthami flos in current Era (not like 2000 years ago) please check out
Materia Medica
Chinese Pharmacopeias
Medical Treasures of the Golden Chamber
In these materials you will read about the findings that confirmed the ancient are true. But most studies are done on mice, more tests on human models will more likely establish a proper treatment regime for the aforementioned chronic diseases.

Can you purchase them from the market?
