Have you noticed any of these symptoms? If yes, it might be a good idea to visit the doctor and rule out pneumonia. With winter upon us, it’s the season of coughs, colds and their more complex versions as well (yes, some of the micro-organisms that cause colds and flu can also cause pneumonia). So be careful if:
- There is chest pain while breathing or coughing
- You have cough with greenish, yellow or even bloody mucous
- You have fever which rises up to 105ºF, with profuse sweating and rapidly increasing breathing & pulse rate
- You are constantly fatigued
- You experience shortness of breath & loss of appetite
- There is confusion or changes in mental awareness
Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with pus or fluid. It is caused by a variety of organisms including bacteria, viruses and fungi. Remember that newborns and older adults may have fewer or milder symptoms, so you need to be extra watchful. Make sure you see a doctor right away as pneumonia can quickly become a life-threatening condition.
