Posted • In 2015 we lost twins (image of me here, pregnant with them). I share so you feel less alone if you are suffering. I turned to puppies and my own dog for comfort to process the sadness of our losses. We named several lost pregnancies, *Phoenix*. The phoenix is an immortal bird associated with Greek mythology that cyclically regenerates or is otherwise born again. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by rising from the ashes of its predecessor. I recognize that not everyone has a dog or puppy to cry on or with-or ends up having their little Phoenix like we did. Dr. Julia Sen, psychologist, taught me yesterday in our interview for our podcast , that by leaning into my dog for comfort and visiting puppies, I was finding tenderness to process my grief. I recall so many moments reaching out to my dog for her unconditional love as she licked up my salty tears. Finding tenderness was so helpful to me. This evening I will be lighting a candle at 7pm to honour the precious little ones who shone for just a short time and are always in our hearts. A little step towards awareness and processing the grief of pregnancy and infancy loss.

If you are in Ontario and have been struggling with processing your grief of pregnancy loss or delayed time to conception, reach out to my friends and colleagues , psychologist for help or at for hypnosis. I also want to acknowledge that on my own journey of infertility and losses that delayed time to conception and periods showing up every month brought me more grief than the actual pregnancy losses. So please recognize that if you are having intense feelings of loss from not yet being able to start or complete your family or from having lost babies, grief is grief and we all process it differently. Get help if it is too much.

If you listened to my recent interview with on the podcast, you know that miscarriage and mental health go hand in hand.

Miscarriage affects every person differently, but can lead to grief, anxiety, depression, and even symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is important for doctors to recognize, acknowledge, and support our patients as they cope with their loss.

That’s why Pollin is building programs to provide our patients with access to the resources they need to take care of their mental health before, during, and after a pregnancy.

EP 20: Fertility Myth Busting w/ Dr. Meivys Garcia

Do Fertility drugs cause cancer or Can IVF cause autism or ADHD? These are some of the most common concerns women have when thinking about fertility drugs.

The short answer is NO.

Even though fertility specialist Dr. Garcia knew better, it didn't stop her from doing endless research just to be sure because she had a cancer scare after 5 rounds of IVF. So, we are super pumped to have her back to share what she has found.

As for increased risks of autism or ADHD after IVF? There's no proof that there is a direct correlation but you need to hear the details to understand the facts because there is more than meets the eye.

Have you heard about the research that IVF babies have higher IQ? Find out if it's too good to be true .... we like the sound of this study when all 3 of us have IVF babies!

Stay till the end because who really wants to do IVF unless you have to? That's why Dr. Garcia covers easy tips for natural conception.

Whether you are trying to have a baby the good old fashioned way or getting help at the fertility clinic, fears and questions may creep up. At least they did for both Dr. Tanya and Mary even though they are healthcare professionals who have treated over 10,000 women. They know this to be true for most women.... Which is why they are candidly sharing the fears they faced going through their own fertility journeys because they want to empower you to let go of your fears.

They want to dispel some myths which will not only save you time and heartache from endless google search but also calm your anxieties by sharing facts and evidence based research to increase your chances of a successful pregnancy.

Dr. Meivys Garcia thought she would become a doctor, get married, have kids and look after them. She was already in the field of fertility, having NO idea should would become someone that needed fertility help.

She talks about the shame she felt, how she didn’t share her difficulties with her co-workers, people trained to help with fertility issues. She finally opened up, got assistance and had 2 amazing kids, one at age 33 and one at 40. She also talks about the challenges of fertility at an advanced age.

Episode 14 Valentine’s Day gift - Mindfulness for fertility with Dr. Alda Ngo/Stephanie Curran

Starts at 12:27 - “we are super excited”

In anticipation of Valentine's Day, we wanted to do something special to add lightness to your day because we know that celebrations like this can be triggering and difficult (especially with a pandemic in the backdrop) when trying to start a family and suffering from subfertility.

It may lead you down a slippery slope of non-stop thinking. But here's the thing, your thoughts are not reliable and often filled with all kinds of trash talk generating more worries and fears which you end up believing even though they are made up stories that aren’t even true.

So we brought in Dr. Alda Ngo and Stephanie Curran, both Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, who not only shared how mindfulness helped them on their own fertility journeys, but through their expertise, knowledge, and full hearts, gifted you an incredible 7 minute guided meditation. Stephanie who had endometriosis and low ovarian reserve found mindfulness helped her connect back to herself and her husband.

Dr. Alda who had unexplained infertility for 7 years and multiple miscarriages, got a positive pregnancy test the first day of a 10 day silent meditation retreat and anchored herself in the steadiness of her breath and watched the storm of her thoughts without judgment not getting swept away by sitting with them as she made peace with the unknown of the future.

Mindfulness takes practice and gets easier the more you practice. Research shows mindfulness can elevate your mood, flood your brain with happy mood molecules and improve your perception of your fertility journey and in doing so may help you persevere and shorten the time to get pregnant. We hope you love this podcast as much as we did!

Are you losing your patience over something that's not happening?

Be patient. There is a time for everything. If you try to rush things before time, you only hamper their growth.

When we don't see things progressing in life the way we want, we become impatient. Impatience brings negativity, restlessness and anxiety. When we do anything with an agitated mind, even though we make efforts, it takes longer to happen. When we allow time and space, we allow things to take their natural course. When anything grows naturally, it grows beautifully.

If a plant is nourished well, at the right season, it itself blossoms. Be patient and while waiting, nourish yourself with positive thoughts, you too will see yourself blossom.

Episode 13: How to Survive the two week wait... How to avoid going crazy while you wait

We don't know about you, but when it comes to the two week wait (2ww), it's THE WORST! And let's face it, it really tests your patience especially when a day feels like an eternity.

It doesn't matter how much common sense you have, the 2ww kinda makes you... well ... crazy... at least we'll speak for ourselves.

When we were trying to conceive, Mary would look for breast tenderness (as she'd cop a feel multiple times a day) while Tanya would put a p*e test up to the light hoping to see a faint positive line even when it was too early.

The point is, one of the toughest parts of the emotional rollercoaster ride of baby making is the TWO WEEK WAIT whether you are trying to conceive naturally or if you are doing an IUI or IVF.

If you are anything like us and want to avoid the struggle, we want to help you thrive during the 2ww and manage the suspense, grab your earbuds and listen to this podcast.

In this episode you will learn...
-The best time to test your pregnancy hormones
-How early to start testing with an at home pregnancy test so you don't waste your time and money
-How to thrive on your two week wait and manage your anxiety
-How much time you should take off after IVF transfer
-To recognize pregnancy symptoms and how to know when you are officially pregnant
