A Love Letter from Alys
Hello!
I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. The past 2 years has been a great challenge for everyone and I am truly hoping you've all found the energy and courage to rise above it all and prevail. I don't know how to start this especially since I've been on radio silence for most of the pandemic so I'll just dive right in.
I've been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer Stage 3C last May and I've spent most of the year going through medical procedures to fight this. I've been hospitalized twice, did a course of chemotherapy and gone through an extensive operation which included full hysterectomy, debulking and bowel resection. I thought I was on my way to full recovery and things were looking very promising. But cancer is proving to be quite a tougher opponent than expected.
My body has stopped responding to my current regimen and the cancer has metastasized to my bowels and lymph nodes. My doctor has advised me to go through another course of chemotherapy with a more aggressive drug but she also strongly suggested that we add immunotherapy to increase my chances of survival. And now I find myself in a bit of a predicament.
My family has already spent quite a lot to finance my medical needs. Paying for my medical bills has already cost us an arm and a leg and unfortunately, I don't know if we can afford the additional immunotherapy right now. It would require me to go through 22 sessions and every session costs 50,000 pesos just for the medication alone so it'll add up to another 1.1 million pesos. I told my mom I'll take my chances with just the chemo and no immunotherapy. I can see that she and my sister are devastated that I'm deciding that way. So now I find myself plucking up all the courage I can muster to reconsider and find a way to make this medical procedure happen. And this is where I begin... I am knocking at your door and seeing if I could ask for your help... to get a second try at life.
