Let’s face it- People have their thoughts about Diabetes especially if they are personally connected.

As a Diabetes Nurse Educator I get asked many questions…. I always want to provide clients with the most open, honest and culturally competent responses a.k.a the TRUTH!

So let’s dive right into common MYTHS or Misconceptions about Diabetes.
Let’s really uncover the Truth about Diabetes.

Myth 1: People with diabetes can’t eat sugar

This is one of the most common diabetes myths; that people with the condition have to eat a sugar-free diet.

People with diabetes need to eat a diet that is balanced, which can include some sugar in moderation.

Myth 2: Type 2 diabetes is mild
This diabetes myth is widely repeated, but of course it isn’t true.

No form of diabetes is mild.

If type 2 diabetes is poorly managed it can lead to serious (even life-threatening) complications.

Myth 3: Type 2 diabetes only affects fat people

While type 2 diabetes is often associated with being overweight and obese by the media, it is very untrue that type 2 diabetes only affects overweight people.

Around 20% of people with type 2 diabetes are of a normal weight, or underweight.

Myth 4: People with diabetes go blind and lose their legs

Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness and also causes many amputations each year. However, those people with diabetes that control blood pressure, glucose, weight and quit smoking all increase their chances of remaining complication free.

Blindness and amputation are therefore preventable and the vast majority of people with diabetes will avoid blindness and amputation, particularly if annual diabetic health checks are attended each year.

Take a small peak into our love story ✨

We dated for over a year after meeting online.
We were engaged shortly after
Married two months later 💍

A few months prior to marriage we experienced our first pregnancy loss not knowing that more loss was ahead. But through all the ups and downs, we committed to always take time to make our marriage a priority.

9 months after marriage we were blessed with our first child together our baby boy AJ 🌈👶🏽

So when times get difficult we will always know and trust that something beautiful is ahead.

Trust in the process
Have faith
And remember your why in all that you do.

Obstacles have allowed me to grow in ways I have never imagined. Even when the challenge feels overwhelming there is a lesson to be learned within the journey.

Story time✨✨-I was 3 weeks postpartum (3rd child), sleep deprived, anxious and drained when my graduate school professor wanted to “meet” with me. At this point I knew this meeting wouldn’t be a great one because I missed a few classes to deliver my son. When we met she told me “motherhood is a choice” being a Nurse Educator is a priority and based on my choice I could not make it out of the graduate program which I had only 7 months to complete.

I was DEVASTATED. I prayed for my son and I knew my will to succeed but how could I make over 500 clinical hours as 30 something, new mom?

I literally had no idea how I gained momentum in that moment and responded to my Professor that I will graduate with my cohort because you can prioritize Motherhood and your career.

So with my back against the wall (and my breastfeeding pump in tote), I went to all remaining lectures, conferences(in person), hospitals over 30 miles away to gain my clinical hours to earn my degree.

My will was my drive in those 7 months, my actions were for my children(early examples), the ultimate test of strength, and for all women out there that have ever been told No or that they were unable to achieve a goal.

So on a very sunny April Morning in 2018 my professor came to me and apologized. She even said I did the unimaginable. The following month I earned my Master’s in Science- Nursing Education.

Funny thing- my cohort was the last Nursing Education group at the University. If I had given up I would not have had a second chance.

So when things feel tough…. Remember there is a lesson to be learned.

Never give up.

Happy Monday ✨

When you have Diabetes there are many little tips to help you get through those “low” blood 🩸 sugar moments.

One of the most effective ways is the 15:15 rule.

The 15:15 rule is a treatment for a hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) event.
By definition the 15-15 rule: you have 15 grams of carbohydrate to raise your blood sugar and check it after 15 minutes. If it’s still below 70 mg/dL, have another serving.

Repeat these steps until your blood sugar is at least 70 mg/dL. Once your blood sugar is back to normal, eat a meal or snack to make sure it doesn’t lower again.

Some items that contain 15 grams of carbs are:

Glucose tablets (see instructions)
Gel tube (see instructions) or cake icing!
4 ounces (1/2 cup) of juice or regular soda (not diet)
1 tablespoon of sugar, honey, or corn syrup
Hard candies, jellybeans or gumdrops—see food label for how many to consume.

🔑 Point: Many people tend to want to eat as much as they can until they feel better. This can cause blood sugar levels to shoot way up. Using the step-wise approach of the "15-15 Rule" can help you avoid this, preventing high blood sugar levels.

Nurse Sam Tip 💡-for parents of children living with Diabetes. Young children usually need less than 15 grams of carbs to fix a low blood sugar level: Infants may need 6 grams, toddlers may need 8 grams, and small children may need 10 grams. This needs to be individualized for the child so discuss the amount needed with your Health Care Provider.
