What you see here is an example of scapular winging. Winging is where the shoulder blade tends to protrude outward away from the thorax. This position is often associated with scapular dyskinesis or abnormal motion of the scapula when performing tasks with the involved arm. It is often attributed to overuse and results in painful trigger points/dysfunction around the shoulder, neck, and shoulder blade. Dry needling with electrical nerve stimulation is a great way to help manage pain and dysfunction while of course working on strengthening the muscles around the shoulder blade to correct the dysfunction. This issue is often seen in individuals with poor posture, overhead athletes, and those with jobs that require frequent repetitive lifting or use of the arm.
If you have been dealing with any sort of shoulder injury or pain feel free to reach out to me to discuss ways in which physical therapy can help you.
Medial epicondylitis is characterized by pain on the inside of the elbow which is exacerbated by frequent bending of the wrist and elbow especially while gripping things. It is more commonly known as golfer’s elbow but affects a wide range of athletes and workers performing heavy manual labor involving frequent use of their hands. I recently experienced a flare after doing a lot of yard work in conjunction with frequent lifting and carrying a newborn. Oh the joys of home ownership and parenting! Luckily the pain with this condition is easily managed with rest, ice, anti inflammatory medication, and dry needling. It is also easily treatable with soft tissue mobilization, stretching, and strengthening the components associated with the affected arm. If you’re dealing with persistent aches and pains schedule an appointment today so we can get you feeling better!

Testing out my new ES-130. I’d say it’s ready to go! Dry needling is an excellent way to reduce pain, decrease spasm, and improve mobility. Electrical nerve stimulation enhances the effects of dry needling and often makes it more comfortable. This therapeutic intervention has been a game changer for many of my patients and they often get relief and results in just 1-2 sessions! Call me to schedule an evaluation and see if dry needling is an option to help you out!
