What you see here is an example of scapular winging. Winging is where the shoulder blade tends to protrude outward away from the thorax. This position is often associated with scapular dyskinesis or abnormal motion of the scapula when performing tasks with the involved arm. It is often attributed to overuse and results in painful trigger points/dysfunction around the shoulder, neck, and shoulder blade. Dry needling with electrical nerve stimulation is a great way to help manage pain and dysfunction while of course working on strengthening the muscles around the shoulder blade to correct the dysfunction. This issue is often seen in individuals with poor posture, overhead athletes, and those with jobs that require frequent repetitive lifting or use of the arm.

If you have been dealing with any sort of shoulder injury or pain feel free to reach out to me to discuss ways in which physical therapy can help you.

I am excited for your success and glad I was able to help you on your journey. Thank you for the shout out!

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

Short answer is no. While there are similarities that exist such as the use of the same monofilament needles and that both techniques are used to treat/manage pain they differ conceptually.

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and is based on ancient Chinese beliefs regarding energy flow or Qi (pronounced “chee”). Energy flows between specific points on the body and these lines between points are known as meridians. These points and lines are believed to be connected to your internal organs. A person whom has smooth flowing Qi is said to be healthy and a person who has an obstruction or deficient Qi may be sick already or become ill. Placing needles along these meridians help to unblock, re-direct, or improve a persons Qi resulting in reduced pain and improved overall health and organ function.

Dry needling while being a newer 20th century treatment is a western medicine intervention based on the neuromuscular trigger points and referred pain. Palpable knots and bands in the muscle that are often found to be tender are needled to produce relaxation. The points needled on the body correspond to the area of the body where the musculoskeletal problem exists and the pathway that the nerve travels to feed the muscle or body area of concern. Needling these points and pathways lead to relaxation, improved flexibility, mobility, strength, and reduced pain.

Medial epicondylitis is characterized by pain on the inside of the elbow which is exacerbated by frequent bending of the wrist and elbow especially while gripping things. It is more commonly known as golfer’s elbow but affects a wide range of athletes and workers performing heavy manual labor involving frequent use of their hands. I recently experienced a flare after doing a lot of yard work in conjunction with frequent lifting and carrying a newborn. Oh the joys of home ownership and parenting! Luckily the pain with this condition is easily managed with rest, ice, anti inflammatory medication, and dry needling. It is also easily treatable with soft tissue mobilization, stretching, and strengthening the components associated with the affected arm. If you’re dealing with persistent aches and pains schedule an appointment today so we can get you feeling better!

Who would have thought that this would make someone’s face feel so relaxed?!?! These facial points along with other areas of the neck are often needled together to reduce neck pain, headache pain, and temporomandibular joint pain. This picture is from my first course three years ago to the day. Since then, I have also taken more advanced needling courses to become certified in integrative dry needling (CIDN).
can you find them all?

Testing out my new ES-130. I’d say it’s ready to go! Dry needling is an excellent way to reduce pain, decrease spasm, and improve mobility. Electrical nerve stimulation enhances the effects of dry needling and often makes it more comfortable. This therapeutic intervention has been a game changer for many of my patients and they often get relief and results in just 1-2 sessions! Call me to schedule an evaluation and see if dry needling is an option to help you out!
