When I began my Craniosacral and Myofascial Release practice over 25 years ago, very few believed that cranial bones are movable, or recognized the importance of fascial systems. But by now, most people have heard of fascia and understand the importance of cranial bone releases. Here is a detailed explanation of what fascia is, as well as a picture showing the myofascial lines.

Fascia is the first cell that forms in a zygote (the beginnings of an embryo). Fascia is connective tissue, meaning it connects and supports different parts of the body. It provides structure, allowing muscles to contract and stretch, and organs to function properly. Fascia supports and protects internal structures and allows tissues to slide smoothly against each other, reducing friction. Fascia is rich in sensory receptors, contributing to the body's sense of movement and position. Energy flows through the mitochondria in the fascia in the form of electrons and protons, ultimately powering the production of ATP, the cell's energy currency. Healthy fascia is flexible and elastic, allowing for smooth movement and function. When fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can cause pain, stiffness, and limited movement.
Types of fascia:
Superficial Fascia: Lies beneath the skin and separates it from underlying tissues.
Deep Fascia: Surrounds muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels, forming compartments.
Visceral Fascia: Surrounds internal organs.
Parietal Fascia: Lines the walls of body cavities.
Here is a view of the Myofascial (muscle/connective tissue) lines:
