If we want to meet their learning needs, we first have to meet their relational ones.

If we want them to be open to learning, they first have to open to the adult they are learning from - and they won’t be open if they don’t feel seen, safe, and cared for. It’s not always easy, it’s just how it is.♥️

The retained reflexes causing the biggest emotional problems are…

Creating more trouble with the emotional foundation of the child. When these reflexes are retained, the child’s emotions may seem:

😩Immature (past age-appropriate)
😩Frustrating and exhausting
😩Confusing and misunderstood

If the child has one or more retained reflexes that are preventing the child from becoming more emotionally grounded, they may be prone to some of the following emotional behaviors:

😢Screaming
😢Biting and hitting
😢Throwing objects
😢Freezing in place
😢Anxiety
😢Extreme tantrums and meltdowns
😢Fight or Flight response

You can usually tell by the signs or symptoms of the emotional outburst that there is a retained reflex present. Find out the most commonly retained reflexes when kids experience disconnections in their emotions by commenting "EMOTIONAL" in the comments and we'll send the you the link for the reflexes.

TIME IN vs TIME OUT

What's the difference?

When a young person is overwhelmed or acting out, do we send them away to “think about what they’ve done”… or do we invite them in to help them feel safe and seen?

Time-Out often looks like isolation — a child left alone to “calm down”.

Time-In is connection-focused — an adult stays close, offering co-regulation and support.

Both approaches aim to manage behaviour, but only one builds emotional awareness, trust, and resilience. Can you guess which one?

Let’s shift from power struggles to connection moments. Because behaviour is communication — and connection is the key.

You don’t want to be less sensitive, you want to be more regulated.
There’s quite a difference.

Being sensitive is quite a gift but can also be difficult in a world that can be pretty rough around the edges.
When we’re told we’re being “too sensitive” instead of being helped with our emotions and deep processing, the world becomes overwhelming.
The trick is not to toughen up, but to find ways to help your system back to regulation.
This is about therapy, it is about becoming more aware inside and out and it’s about learning to both self-regulate and to co-regulate with safe people in our lives.

This Friday I will launch a new cohort of our flagship 8 module workshop series "The Essential PAUSE for Self-Leadership" . Together, meeting every other week, we dive into each element of PAUSE - distilled IFS inspired practices and skills that support everyone in community to work together with awareness of parts and greater connection to Self.
PAUSE- unfolds our everyday practice and integration of IFS
PAUSE - is a practical, simple tool we can give to our clients
PAUSE - offers micro practices to share IFS in bit size pieces
PAUSE - provides a process to guide interactions and community process.
Many IFS therapists have integrated PAUSE into their work with clients. And many IFS therapists and coaches have referred their clients, who are educators, parents, business owners and community leaders, to come learn our model. Please spread the word. This is a powerful way for us to equip our community with the essential knowledge and concrete tools to take IFS into everyday life. PAUSE unlocks Self-Leadership.
Are you interested but Fridays are not the right time? We have other cohorts starting at other times in April and June. We endeavor to schedule so everyone around the world can find a time to join us!
