Parents of toddlers, be careful swinging your little ones by their arms. Their ligaments and joints are still developing, in that even a tiny yank on their arm can make their elbow bone slip out of place. It’s called nursemaid’s elbow, and it turns fun moments into sudden meltdowns real fast.

If a game of “swing me, daddy” got your child wincing and screaming when you touch their arm and there are no signs of injury, they most likely have a nursemaid’s elbow. Come see us. We’ve treated it countless times with a gentle maneuver to guide the bone back to where it should be. Let’s fix it, so your youngster can get back to doing what they enjoy most—being playful.

And here we are with another round of Q&A. Today, our experts unpack a common orthopedic term.

Q: What does “bone on bone” actually mean?
A: “Bone on bone” is the layman’s term for advanced or end-stage osteoarthritis.

In a healthy joint, cartilage acts as a cushion, covering the ends of bones and allowing them to glide over each other with minimal friction. Osteoarthritis causes your cartilage to break down over time. It becomes thinner and rougher, and it eventually disappears altogether. When you don’t have cartilage left to separate your bones, they rub directly against each other during movement, causing severe pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, swelling, and other debilitating symptoms.

🚨🦵 Got swelling, tenderness, and dull pain in your leg that worsens when you move it or put weight on it—but no obvious cause?

You could be dealing with a hairline fracture. These tiny, almost-invisible cracks often fly under the radar, as they develop gradually and have no noticeable symptoms. While not as bad as the other types, hairline fractures can get worse and grind your routine to a halt if left untreated.

Here at Sheba Orthopedics, Dr. David and Dr. Justin Sheba specialize in fracture care. They can detect even the most subtle signs and provide effective treatment to ensure proper healing.

We’re back with another round of Q&A, bringing you the sharpest insights straight from our orthopedic experts!

Q: I often hear a crackling or popping noise when I bend my knee. Should I get worried?
A: That sound you're hearing is known as crepitus, and in most cases, it’s completely harmless. It only becomes a cause for concern when it’s accompanied by pain, swelling, and/or instability.

Painful knee crepitus shouldn’t be ignored, as it often points to an underlying issue that needs proper medical intervention. Common causes include arthritis, ligament tears, and meniscal tears.

If you’re dealing with persistent pain after swimming 5 laps, don’t power through it. Come see one of our specialists here at Sheba Orthopedics. Call us to schedule an appointment: (724) 437-8200.
